When will pheasants start nesting in Northeast Iowa?

I was just curious as to when birds will typically start nesting in Northeast Iowa. We just got some oats planted that will hopefully provide some nesting cover this spring, but they won't be a foot tall for another few weeks. Is this too late ?

Oats are one of the best covers for nesting. My opinion is that the good numbers of years past were largely due to oats. They aren't disrupted like hay ground is.

As South Dakota goes from small grains to corn and soybeans I think their numbers will suffer.

I totally agree , here in Kansas where there is a Milo and wheat rotation there is huntable numbers of birds vs corn and Soybean rotation its tuff to find birds unless there are big of CRP /native grass

Birds are on the nest now. The peek-hatch is around June 10 or so. Regardless you're not too late on the oats. There's always late or re-nesting hens. Plus, hen's can lead chicks/broads into the oats for food, dusting, etc.

Good luck with everything. Let us know how things turn out:thumbsup:
