What would you do?

I had an older guy I work with today tell me, I use to bird hunt and I said o yeah, where at he said in the middle of the state and we shoot out of the truck. And my reply to him note; He's 58 and I am 26 said to him it's people like you that hurt the bird hunting sport I love so dearly. Hav'nt heard a word out of him again. I even pulled out my bird hunting pictures and showed him, see this is the moral way to do it, it's the first rule besides gun safety in you hunter ed. Fair chase and have good morals. Long live the Ringneck

Unfortunately a lot of people choose to hunt that way, especially with grouse in MN. I don't see the fun in just shooting birds, its all about the chase and the dogs.

Nice work!! Ethics and integrity go a long way. In both personal and professional. But especially when it comes to our sporting endeavors.

It's just gun play to some folks. Not interested in a good walk bearing a gun, seeing what's on the ground and in the sky as you go through a field or some cover. No art. Just shootin'. A farmer/rancher friend in western Kansas saw some local yo-yos running pickups through some stubble and shooting out the windows. He knew them, does not himself hunt, but was sufficiently appalled that he called the law on them.

In the early 80's I saw 2 pickup's about 100 yrds apart with a chain tied off between them driving thru a winter wheat field-- shooters in each truck--notice I did not say hunters--this was in west central SD--where is the sport in that?

On that same weekend came upon a guy walking down the middle of the road, a guy walking about 20 yrds across the fence (on private land) but get this--the jeep was driving down the ditch--I just waved at them because I knew that the game warden was just over the top of the hill a half mile away--man I sure enjoyed that chat with the warden.;)

I know that sometimes the locals complain about the non res hunters but in both of these cases the plates on the vehicles said South Dakota, does not matter I turn all of them in to the law.

I've bumped into a few these out there too. Hate to say it, but they too where SD res. With that said, every state has a handful of these types running around.

Yep, nothing new really. In ND it was ND residents driving through fields shooting high-power rifles at deer and leaving them lay:mad: In W KS when someone is trespassing on the land we hunt, it's almost always a KS tag or group of KS tags (often 1 of 2 counties...whether it's b/c they have the highest concentration of ppl or b/c there is an over-abundance of jerks in those counties I don't know). Either way, it does seem that the average NR does not cause trouble while visiting. I know when I'm in another state I don't want to contribute to the locals' negative perception of "NR's"!! I like feeling welcome in those places......

I would guess that the folks that spend the money to travel for hunting are more ethical in the way they hunt vs the average Joe who walks out the back door with a gun a few times a year. Not to say there are unethical non resident hunters, certainly there are, but when you have good hunting in your area you may not appreciate it as much.

Trouble is unless I'm mistaken in SD road hunting is legal. I believe it was last year they were raising all kinds of heck because the state wanted to mandate using non-toxic shot in the ditches. People fought it and it failed. Road hunting is a way of live up there. When they outlaw it, then you can begin to talk about wether its wrong. Now, ethical hunters just have to suck it up.
In KS to be legal you have to have permission of land owners on both sides of the road to to shoot from the road; as in pass shooting snows or geese as they pass over. Totally illega to shoot from a truck.

Yes it is, but there are still rules about what is legal and what is not--niether of the things I posted were legal and were totally unethical.

Kansas law has changed and now a hunter needs permission from the adjacent landowner only on the side of the road s/he is hunting. Of course, if it's both sides, both landowners' permissions are required.
