What Type of weather to expect ?

January Kansas Weather Can't be Predicted

Ok being this my first hunt in Ks. and I can't trust the weather guys forcast, I was wondering what type of conditions do I expect in mid Jan. ??

There is no way to predict what weather you will encounter in Jan. in KS. You may have good luck and have temps 20-30 with powdery snow; or bad luck with highs in the 70s which would kill your pheasant hunting.

If you have flex in your schedule, keep an eye on the national weather map and try to arrive with some cool to cold weather and some precip.

I hope you have a wonderful hunt in the great and hospitable state of Kansas, my home place.

Trucks in Kansas Country

I am new to Kansas, but have seen some pretty sloppy roads following a light rain shower. I imagine a little freeze/thaw will compound the problem. Do the grain/oil trucks run balls out all winter long too?

The grain trucks will be gone off the country roads by the time hunting season starts. The oil trucks are year round.

i love crappy weather, even try to time my hunts with it, but it is only fair to the guy who asked to let him know that in some situations your access can be limited by impassable mud roads and/or snow clogged/drifted fields...we all know blue bird days usually are less than desirable!

Oh so true. Those unimproved grade roads can be deep, greasy mud and any of the roads can be drifted over with snow after a blizzard.

These guys are all correct in what they are saying, could be anything from 70 and sunny down to 0, snow, and high winds. Be prepared for anything.

That being said....

I typically make it out west for one hunt in January, and I've hunted more times in a long sleeved shirt and jeans than anything else.

i hear its gonna be a cold winter this year...

however, i find hunting pheasants on a snow day is better than a warm day....

warm days, pheasants like to run bc they pretty much blend in with the ground if they run

snow, they do like to fly bc theres no cover and they know it when they are in a field such as corn.
