What does your dog do when you miss a bird?

I had a chance today to shoot a 50-yard crossing shot, and didn't shoot, it was sort of into the wind and I didn't have my 12 gauge, it was a shot I could have made and my dog just kind of gave me the look and I knew that he was pissed off. Sometimes those long shots are not a good idea, because you can end up losing that bird. I've been working on trying not to take those longer shots.
 
My dog will run after the bird until I successfully call him off, but sometimes he will pickup the wad from my shotshell(s). Bring it back and spit it out at my feet. I think its his way of saying "here, you arent wurffa shit so this is all i could bring you. Get yourself together!". Its quite embarassing when he does it on the dove field in front of my friends.
