What can we do

So with birds nymbers next to none in eastern Neb, what do I do besides driving upon hours each weekend to hunt?

drive, drive, drive then drive you some more! that's what i do just ask my wife! :D

Yeah I have drove alot this year, but man putting the miles and gas on my truck and nothing but a couple of birds. I know we do it for the love but theres gotta be a point, and there is no way you can tell me that Nebraska's game and fish has put as much effort the MN, ND, SD and KS has. And this is before the drought. I think in ten years all Nebraska's bird hunting will be done on preserves.

I waterfowl hunt quite a bit. It's really what I am much more than an upland bird hunter. Even though I have 3 pointers my first love is the whistling wings of late season mallards circling your blocks. Gets my blood pumping!

However, I am very concerned about our ducks right now. We have an entire generation of waterfowl hunters who know nothing but record fall flights of ducks. They don't remember the days of the late 80's and early
90's when duck numbers were at all time lows. I am afraid we may be heading back down that road again in the next 2 years if we don't get some water in the prairie pothole region.

Same thing you do if something else you can't control doesn't go your way. You nut up,push ahead, and do the best you can.

I live in Southern Wisconsin which I promise is worse than what a lot of the you guys are dealt as far as bird numbers yet I find enough to keep it interesting plus I drive to other places, jump ducks, hunt rabbits, and hunt crows to supplement my shotgunning desires.

Find a preserve. It's not wild bird hunting, but it's actually cheaper and a lot less frustrating than driving hundreds of miles for a couple birds and if you have a dog, it'll at least get your partner the work he needs to stay in top form over a bird-scarce season.

Drive

Drive out here to Washington state, hunt for a couple weeks, and then Iowa will seem like SD:D. A good yearly total would be 60,000. Thank God for CA quail.
