What’s everyone feeding?

Purina One Large Breed

The type/brand of dog food you select should be readily available either locally or shipped. Constantly switching back and forth from one or the other is not good for the digestive track.

Also, read the label.

This is what I currently feed, but my dog isn’t crazy about it. She has weeks she eats great and weeks she doesn’t. I call on farm stores for a living and I see more and more bringing on valupak and they all swear by the black bag. But these are all stores telling me this. Yet to meet some who feeds it.

I know a trainer and guide who breeds GSP's, feeds the Valupak and really likes it. I think she pays $43 for a large bag. She recommends it fwiw.

There are a lot of good quality dog food available but when I was looking to replace PPP, there are some brands I didn't try, simply because I can't get it easily. I live in a rural part of NW Arkansas and I can't have food delivered to my house, so I have to have a dog food I can buy locally. I also spend a lot of time in Kansas City and I bird hunt in MO, Iowa, SD and ND. From my perspective I need to be able to get the same dog food regardless of my location and I can't always rely on an internet order to get it. It's why I was feeding PPP. Now I feed Nutrisource because my dogs like it and I can get it from my local feed store and a pet store chain. Scheels, Menards, Fleet Farm and Runnings also sell it, so I can get it on the road anywhere I hunt.

IMO availability is important to consider when looking at dog food options and some brands of food can be hard to find, depending on where you live and hunt. I've also learned when to leave well enough alone when it comes to dog food. In the past, I've changed dog food out of curiosity or because one of my friends was feeding something else and talked me into it. When you find a dog food you can afford, your dogs like to eat it and it's easy to buy wherever you live or hunt.....then leave it alone. Pay attention to your dogs. Let them tell you when there is an issue with their food and when you need to make a change. Otherwise, don't try to fix what isn't broken. Anytime I made a switch for the wrong reasons it turned out to be a mistake.
