So maybe it's not quite as dire straits as I thought.
My buddy and I saw 13 roosters and 17 hens and one large covey of quail today. Unfortunately 6 of the roosters were hanging across the road from a CSA by McPherson on the way to hunt our first patch.
Even if we had wild flushes, I bagged the only rooster of the day. My buddy hit one in the same patch but it didn't drop. One of the dogs (which had tracked the rooster he missed for about 300 yards) looked back at him as if to say, "Really? I worked my tail off for that miss?"
We saw birds in CRP, hedge rows, and milo stubble. Even if we only had one for the day, we had great dog work on several points on hens and a great day even if was cold. With a little snow, things could be even better.
