Nearing the end of the season and I had not made it out west to chase pheasants much at all this season . I wanted to get it a real good go hunting some of the walk - in areas and public spots .

Here is the 1st rooster retrieved to hand on the 2nd day of my hunt .

Here is how we ended up our season out west , lots of boot leather worn , Tracking birds for 3 or 400 yds and have them flush 150 yds ahead . Me and the girls just stuck with it and managed to catch up to these late season rascals .

I hope we have turned the corner and we start seeing and upward trend in our upland populations .

Anybody else seeing an upward trend( Modest) this year opposed to the last two or three?

She is a newly turned 14 yr old, her last really good year in the field was year 11 and she hunted a week in SD and accounted for roughly 50 of the birds with a group of six hunters and 5 dogs. Year 12 we hunted Iowa and sd and she was had dropped off significantly, I still hunt her but she usually is just walking along my side and hunts at her on pace, I run her with my other Britts so she doesn't have to do much but just enjoy the scenery. I have had Britts all my life and they have all started to slow down around yr 11 & 12. With most passing on in yrs 13 & 14.

My 13 year old britt hunted every minute this season. I am amazed.

My hunting buddy wants to get a lab. Do you hunt your britts and labs together?

I hunted labs with my oldest Britt for a couple of reasons my oldest Britt was close working and very solid on point. The chocolate was from pointing lab stock and showed good promise but has severe hip dysp and and it was severe at 1 yr old so she became just a cheerleader of the hunters... My yellow didn't come from hunting stock so it was some what old teaching new what hunting was about. It worked out well when they hunted together. I am concerned with the other Britts being bigger runners hunting with my yellow so I've been hunting them separately. This off season my yellow and youngest Britt will be going thru whoa training with the hopes that I can get the yellow to whoa when a Britt is on point. You can hunt them together as long as the hunters have control of their dogs......have hunted with guys with other pointing breeds that will bust a good point......one buddy said I just don't know how to break him of that, I didn't have the heart to tell him my solution.....lol

KSBrittman nice job with the pics. Good pups, hard work and desire got you some nice late season birds.
I hunt with a young Britt and Chocolate Lab, they work out fine together, interesting and fun hunting. For a change of pace one at a time too.

What about the times when you cannot see either dog and the lab sees the brit on point?

The next step will be working in the pigeon field with Britt and lab and letting Britt point while having the lab on a check cord and whoaing her when she sees the Britt on point, hopefully lab will associated that with backing after time. Not sure if I can train the lab to back but will give it a go. My yellow lab does not range with my Britt's and is very obidient so I haven't had that issue before. I did hunt in SD with a buddy who hunted a lab and setter together and when the lab saw the settermon point it would go towards the setter and usually flush the bird, few times it would throw a quick point.

A friend of mines lab would associate my Brits beeper caller ( when my dogs on point ) and run in and flush the birds , some times in range most of the time not . She was introduced to electric stimulation and became very serviceable working with my Brits and great for busting the cattail sloughs .
