Warm season grasses?

I've been out disking the corn. The piece I left for wildlife. Probably about 75 bpa stuff, cobs laying everywhere. About 10 acres, expensive wildlife feed. RU corn sprayed the first weed greenup then left alone. Giant foxtail, barnyard grass and red root thickend things up pretty good. About 40 head of deer, 75 turkeys. Don't know how many pheasants, I see tracks everyday but seldom see them. I have thick stuff. 5 hens flew out of the end into the side oats not roosters I expect they ran for it.

Are any of you familiar with Indian Grass? I'm working on a small patch, kinda neat stuff. I've been hand picking here and there from nice looking plants. Indian Grass is native here but a little hard to find. Big Blue Stem, Little Blue are common especially Big Blue.
As far as Switch I haven't ever been able to find any growing naturally up here or ND or MT. Side oats get common in undisturbed areas once you get West of the Missouri.
Where is Wild Switch native to? Farther South Tall Grass Prairie I guess?

I live in east river SD on hiway 12 about 35 miles west of Aberdeen. We have some switch that has to be native. It is not what I would call a stand but perhaps if it was managed differently it would be. Brome grass has invaded most of our native grass land, it is a lot different than when I was a kid.

I got the Buffalo Grass yard sprayed on Friday afternoon with Roundup. It was calm out, and about 70 degrees. That should knock out the green stuff.. Ill overseed next trip out, after I verify that the green stuff is dying..

I planted a 4 acre field 5 years ago that was a 50-50 mix of BB and Indian and the indian is taking over. I know that some of the folks I know who have it wish they didn't, same for switch.

But I so love the look of Indian Grass!

Just broadcasting more Buffalo Grass over the whole thing. It takes pretty easily once the temps get up

Why Buffalo Grass?

That's really a profound statement, isn't it. And I agree with you.

The talk about those grasses like Indian and switch, sure if you plant the wrong one for you you will be unhappy. Indian should just be mixed in at a low volume, say 1-1 1/2 lb per acre. Switch grass is important to research and see which variety will suit you better for your desired result. Some switch gets tall, thick and hard to get through. Absolutely wonderful for deer cover and some birds. But hard to hunt. There is variety's that do not grow as tall and thick like Dakota. Forest berg is a medium, And so on. Going to a grower to see these differences is highly recommended by me at least:D for what it's worth. And man there is a huge difference in the height and density of them. I am so glad I saw them, because I was fixin to make that mistake as well. I am very pleased with what I got so far. But this year is weird for spring spraying. I think I will wait, mow and try again on a normal spring, LOL

Man your right about a weird spring. I cant believe how advanced the greenup is. As for my indian grass/bigblue mix, I wish I'd gone with a 20/80 mix but it is what it is. I'm planning on haying it for the first time this year and I'm anxious to see how many bales come off the 4 plus acres.

I have a lot of June grasses coming in my 5 acre Side oats. I'm thinking about haying it. The Side Oats stand is very good. If there's an opportunity I'd like to spray to kill off the June Grass early next Spring.

Well I gambled and I think it paid off. Everything that was green is now dead completly brown. Now I just have to wait for the warmth and rain to get the Warms up. Just hope I killed enough of the un wanted stuf. If not, a repeat next year should do it. I would just like to not mow, and enjoy it. But as Jt said, it is what it is. And you gotta do what ever it takes to get your desired result.

J t can't you round up as the warms start to kill some of it, then over seed with some switch or what ever you want?

Yeah I probably could hit some of the WSG with RU to kill it but man I sure hate doing that. Just doesnt seem right!! I'm gonna give it a year to see how it looks this fall.

Well if you mow it in the fall, I am told if you time it right. You can kill some or half, if you just let it green a little. The shoots that are not emerged will be un harmed. That will thin it, and leave some room to over seed the others. I will let you know if it works for me in a few weeks.:D
