Wanting to get involved

I have been trying to plan the best way to get involved in the local pheasant hunting crowd....I thought, why not ask here for suggestions. My initial thoughts are to find a local PF chapter, participate in the Burlington rooster roundup, gather resources from the Colorado DOW. (Big fan of the Division of Wildlife...very helpful, and they acutlly want you to get afiled. In Illinois it is merely lip service, our hunting opportunities have been marginalized). I also want to start looking for a bird dog, perhaps the hunting clubs or gun ranges would be a good place to start looking? Probably looking for either a German Shorthair or a Brittany young dog or pup. I also plan to use this site to figure out how to get involved....seems to be a great place with genuinely good people.

Dogs

You may want to check out American Brittany Rescue. They have several dogs over in Missouri and have been sending some to Colorado. There fee is $300 to $350 and you can get some well breed dogs if you look a little.

The sportsman show next week would be a great resource for you. Visit the PF booth to get in touch with the local chapter.

buckmarkshooter,
where in Colorado do you live, I am in the Springs and may be able to help some with the dog situation and such. PM me if you want.

I also want to start looking for a bird dog

Welcome Buckmark, you are absolutely right, this is a great group of folks. As for a dog, you might send a pm to keskam and see what he's got coming online for pups... He has a real strong line of pointing labradors - not the "she points sometimes" labs that everyone has seen - these dogs will hold a point as firm as any GSP I've hunted over. And they'll bring you a wet duck, which is a trick not too many of the traditional pointing breeds can pull off...

Just my $.02 :D

Expo

I second on the ISE (expo). I believe Dale & Brenda Merritt from Bearpoint Kennels will be there. I have been very impressed with the pointing lab pup I got from them. There should be several other breeders there with some info on other breeds. Anytime you get a dog that can hard point upland and then haul a goose back to the blind you know the stars have aligned!!!!!
