Walk in Program

A while back I read something in the Star Tribune about a WIHA program that may be starting this fall. Does anyone know any details about this?

There will be a Walk in hunting program this fall 2011. I believe the plan is to enroll about 10K acres in SW MN. The funding they got should last 3 years and then it could go away. It will be our job as hunters to utilize these lands and build a positive public awareness about them. This is really a great opportunity for Minnesota and Minnesota hunters. If this program grows permanent roots we can then work on the habitat on these parcells.

LOL exactly. I hope it goes through. One thing for sure is we need to pass a dam law that these ideots can't shut down GOV. What a joke. They all should be ashamed. Very un patriotic. All they really care about is lining their pockets. If a program like this falls to the way side because of this. Make sure you vote these lazy bums out next election.

i don't think it will work here. There is too much presure on the public land and I suspect that most of the parcels will be pretty small. How good do you think the hunting will be when several groups of hunters are walking through them every day. I'd rather see the money spent on acquiring more public land.

We see this already with the public lands we have now. Acquiring MORE PUBLIC HUNTING OPPORTUNITIES whether it be the walk-in program or state purchased lands is the ultimate goal. In the short run it may be easier to lease land for such purposes than for the DNR to outright purchase them. Ideally you want both.

I kill more pheasants on small plots of land (public and private) than vast areas of cover. The birds will move on and off the land based on pressure, weather, and the fact that birds shuffle around.

It will work and be a great supplement to the state and Federal land out there.

Many counties do not want more land owned by the state or Feds, but support walk in hunting land. Owning land is expensive if weed control and other cost factors are weighed in. The DNR is having a tough time keeping up with what they already own.

The land that will fit into this program would likely never fall into state hands via a sale or donation.

Maybe this little extra cash into farmers hands is what will be needed to keep more CRP and CREP land from going under the plow.
