Victor Dog Food

As an fyi....the manufacturer of Victor dog food has recently been issued a warning letter after 2024 factory inspections. I know it's a popular dog food and some care about this sort of stuff and others don't but fwiw:

The two guys that started Victor literally built their own plant themselves. They were there from the ground up. Never had a recall while they owned it.

They sold it to a private equity firm in 2020. I now see how that worked out.

The original Victor guys moved nearby after the sale, built a new plant and Next Level is their company.

Used to feed Victor. Changed to Next Level when it became available.

I used to feed Victor, but switched to Kinetic after the recall. I then switched to Extreme Dog Fuel after I found it difficult to get Kinetic. I have been feeding the EDF for a few months now and am very happy with it.

This is what I am feeding right now. It comes in really small kibble and seems super digestible. His stools are small and it seems like he is processing it well. I feed two cups per day in the off season and up to four a day when hunting.

So how much for a big bag of EDF?
In my area it is under $40 when I last looked. I sent them an email a few years ago and I got a response from the owner of the company. I was impressed with their customer service. It is made in Arkansas and if it were easier for me to find, I would have tried it.

It’s interesting to look at the two foods, Next Level and EDF, and see the kcal difference is seemingly similar foods. The NL is 370 and EDF is 459. You need to feed a bit more per serving of the NL according to their guide.

My labs get a cup morning and night when not hunting. 1.5 twice a day when hunting.

That holds their weight and keeps them in good shape. More efficient metabolizing? I don’t know. It’s working well for me.

YMMV
Chestle, you are feeding like I do. My boy is 4yrs old and 68lbs. I do feed him in the morning before a duck hunt. I don't feed him the morning of a pheasant hunt, but wait until the hunting is done for the day. If pheasant hunting, I'll feed him more the night before so he will have an energy load and not worry about twisted tummy, etc.

Do any of us, myself included, ever realize the "fleecing " we take on dog food these days? $50-70 a bag for "scraps and byproducts", really? I look back and we fed our dogs a food called Strongheart for years that was dirt cheap from the local feed store and our dogs were always fine that I remember. My grandpa as well as my dad would give them raw garlic about once a month and I don't ever remember flea or tick or worm problems either. We have all drank the kool-aid and let life get overcomplicated and expensive.

You are so right. I gasp at the price now for a bag of PPP. I can't believe folks pay over $80 a bag now for that stuff.

A lot of people can't afford today's prices. A friend of mine switched from PPP to Valu-Pak to help makes ends meet. Under $40 for a 50 lb bag. She has several dogs and her dogs are doing well on it. I went a different route. I'm keeping my dogs on Nutrisource Performance but got rid of our Dish network. The monthly savings covers the cost of our dog food. Rob Peter to pay Paul.

I use to think that $1 per pound of dog food was on the high side. Now I'm paying over $2. But I'm only feeding one dog so it's not a big deal. I feed my 8 year old female Brittany PPP Complete Essentials 7+. $72 for a 34 lb. bag but a bag lasts over 2 months so I costs me about $1 a day. My dog loves the food and does great on it so for $1 a day it's well worth it.

My Newfoundland had been on Hi Pro Plus for years. After the recall, we switched to ToTW Ancient Grains. He wasn't digesting it very well (gassy). Switched to Purina Pro Plan beef and rice, happy with it. Won't be going back to Victor.

Purina made a food called Hi-Pro back in the 90s and early 2000s, it was a 30-20 that cost us $20/50lb bag. I'd be willing to bet that it is the same food as 30/20 PPP now days but all the sudden that new kibble shape and a fancy bag cost $70 plus and is no where near 50lbs.

I just dropped about 90 bucks onthe high protein inuskshuk. Im feeding half that, half her old food. Worked up to that ratio. I didnt go into the feed store to drop that kind of coin but i figured id give it a shot. He claimed its the highest protein/fat content available.
She was on this for maybe 4 days and we went out for several hours. I noticed the mutt was running still later in the day when normally she wouldve slowed a bit. She was stiff that night, and shouldve been the next day, but she wasnt. This bag will take me into february, ill see how dhe does.

have been feeding it for about a year now. It weighs much more per cup, so one does feed less.
