Veting at K-State

I know some of you guys take your dogs to KSU to the vet and I was wondering how this works and what you think of it. Thanks in advance.

When I was a kid we took a german shephard to them had a tumor in this throat when he was just a pup he lived to be 13y. He was my first dog when we moved to the country when I was a little boy some 25 years ago me and that dog went everywhere together. RIP JAKE

They do good work, but it is pricey.

The only time I go there is when my normal vet is not available. Which is when ever my dogs run into barbed wire

But if you have something really serious, they are not a bad place to go.

X2. We went there when we first moved back to Manhattan about 10 years ago, but only use them for emergencies now.

Another negative is that they are also slow. The vets are teaching student workers using the animals that come in, so everything takes a lot longer.

I was a lot happier being able to get in and out for routine vaccinations and such at the vet we use now.

If it is like University of Wisconsin, it may be the most expensive option available in your state. UW is not shy at its Vet school's pricing, and they can be selective in the cases they take.

That said, they have most of the equipment any Vet would ever need.

Be worth your while to survey small animal vets in your area, and see how you feel about them. Don't know if you can get references.

Best of luck.

On the other hand...

I think the care they give is excellent. My wife called them when I left the house with Rusty and explained his symptoms. The KSU vet (and student) were waiting for me at the front doors when I drove in the parking lot. I barely got him out of the truck before they were checking him over and rushing him back to intensive care...

Each step of the way the vet laid out all the options, made his recommendation and explained why he felt it was the best course of action. At each point I fully understood what was going on and why.

I felt that they were competent as well as caring. The student was especially kind and thoughtful when handling Rusty, and the doc seemed very genuine and honest.

I would expect this kind of care at a mom-n-pop operation where they know me, but I was pleasantly surprised to get it from an operation as large as theirs.

A human going to the ER wouldn't have received better care than what Rusty got at KSU. So if slow and expensive is the down side, then this is the up side.

You would think that someone like me who has a lot of dogs come through his house and needs to have each individual dog spayed or neutered prior to being adopted out, that they would cut a discount to rescue. No. Not even close.
If I have to bring a dog in to the ER, it's 100 bucks to even be seen.
#*($##$ that.

I have my vet's cell phone number. If I'm in a bad situation, I'll call him on his cell and rush my dog to him. AND my vet will work with me on a payment plan if necessary AND cut me a break on the rescue dogs.

I started my dog at KSU vet and the care was good, but I never really saw the same vet more then once. I like having consistency in that the vet knows my dog and vice versa.

I have no doubt that KSU's care is outstanding, but I'll take my vet.

I'm with you on this one. I like dealing with the same guy each time. He knows my dogs by name and he's a bird hunter. He also spent quite a few years doing field trials. His practice here in Alma charges better rates than any other vet we've ever been to (we tried several before finding this guy....I'm not an easy customer to please;). PM sent Tim.

All that being said, KSU vet hospital has its place and they are pretty reliable. Each time one of our vet's customers has a pet pass away, he makes a donation to the KSU vet hospital in said dog's name.
