Vacation report

Well, I finally did it. I waited until later in the season to take my vacation. I felt the need to return to the area I've hunted for so long b/c it's always been good to me. 5 days of fruitless hunting there have convinced me that I have to go elsewhere from time to time.

On the way out my first day, I stopped in Rush county. There were a lot of birds in the WIHA and there was a layer of ice on the grass to help hold them. I got several great points, just me and my 4 dogs. My 4 1/2 month old shorthair made 2 of those on hens. I saw roughly 45 birds in 4 hrs of hunting in Rush county. 10 of which were roosters. The family saw many of the points and most of the birds.

I spent 1/2 day quail hunting in Lyon county. Saw a couple of real nice coveys and some real nice dog work. The pup impressed me again w/ a nice point on a covey of birds. Not a flash point either, a solid point that I waited a full minute to break up.

I went to Rooks county for 1 day. I hunted some great private land. There were plenty of birds, but as you all know, they're tough to get close to in large numbers this time of year. Again, the hens far outnumbered the roosters. We came away with a couple birds and went home happy again.

I felt the need to make one more day trip. I had only 1/2 day Saturday, so I went SW of Concordia. We hunted 2 places. The first must have had 40 birds in it and the second had closer to 60. The main difference was that roughly 70 percent of the birds I saw up there were roosters. I couldn't believe my eyes. It was like the opener, only all the birds were bunched up. They weren't too skiddish there either, but the most of the shot chances were high ones. The pheasants had moved to the tree lines w/ thickets, so the shooting didn't start until the birds topped the trees.

I've concluded that there are loads of birds in KS this season, just don't go directly S of Garfield. If all goes well, we could be looking at an extraordinary year next year!!

Congrats !

Kb,

Sounds like you had a great week. Ain't it great when the young ones start to show some promise. Glad you found lots of birds and you think the numbers are good for next year, Thanks for all your reports and have a happy New Year.

goos for you chad! i'm glad you had a good time. and it good to hear people seeing so many birds. gonna make for a really great next season. i'm going to try to get out for one more long weekend hunt. we hunted again in wakeeny this weekend and we really didnt even see any birds. i think we flushed a total of 4 hens. but thats why they call it hunting. the birds are all bunched up and when you find them its an awesome sight to see. thanks for the report

Nice report. Seeing 100 pheasants in a half day in north central Kansas is extremely decent, isn't it. Sounds like the roosters could still use some thinning in that area, though.

Yes, they could use some thinning out and YES, 100 pheasants in a half day is incredible for NC KS. It is better there this year than I've seen it in all the 6 years I've hunted there. I'd sure like to do my part in taking down the rooster population, but it will require finding a couple more people when I go. Blockers would help w/ getting birds in the bag. It is pretty tough getting in position to shoot sometimes. It's even tougher controlling yourself with such big flushes.

Great report indeed & it looks like you may have another Bird Dog on your hands with that young pup. How was the road conditions & snow pack in that NC region? Looks like a break in the weather comming up so I can try to make one last trip this season. I'm just getting a little soft in my old age.

There is plenty of packed snow on the roads, but as long as it stays cold, they won't be a problem.
KB, we hunted saturday and almost all of the snow was gone. The only real snow was on the east side of cover since the wind blew so hard. I hyperextended my left knee when Lefty, my boss's GSP, went on point and I had to walk across what I thought was l a level fence row. I stepped on the snow and my left leg sank clean up to my "boys" Lefty was on point less that 5 yards ahead of me so I struggled to get free. I got my left leg out and my right leg sank up to the "boys" again. The rooster flushed, I'm sure because I was cussing in pain that he decided he had better take flight. One off balance and awkward shot later and his flight got cancelled. I hobbled the rest of the day but we ended up with 4 roosters and 1 quail. We definatley got more snow back towards your home place and back towards my home place. It was nice that the roads were froze, especially some of those nasty roads in Southern Ellsworth Co. We saw quite a few birds but just couldn't get close to most of them....

Boys

Lee,

Be careful with those "boys" they are sensitive, lol Can you give us rough idea where you were hunting and a snow total?

Thanks for the report, KB. I had been thinking about going to the Concordia area anyway. Looks like I should make time for a day trip.

P.S. If you are recruiting blockers, I can promise you I would shoot in the air whenever a bird comes my way. (results not guaranteed)

I hunted Southern Ellsworth County and Central Rice County. The snow is almost all gone except for the drifts and sun sheltered sides of things. I think dad said that they got around 6" of snow. We definately got more around Eastern Ks. though. It's forecast to snow Wednesday again so we'll see how much more we get then..

I love it. That is funny. I can promise only to shoot AT the birds that are in the air as well. I'll keep you in mind. I'll probably start a thread to get a group together. We'd like to have at least 5 guys when we go back. I don't hunt in large groups often, but the situation calls for it.

I can probably bring 2 people if needed...Let me know!

Will do Lee! The birds are in such large groups that they know when we're coming. 2 of us hunted one draw and came from 2 different directions. That worked very well, but would've worked even better w/ more bodies. When the time comes, it will be a day trip. I have to wait and see what shakes loose w/ my work schedule.

Blockers

Too bad I'm already committed :) I did my first blocking last year in SD. Wow now that was fun. I was shooting a o/u and should have been shooting an auto.:)
