Two dog box

Im looking to upgrade from the single crate in the back of my Tahoe to a two dog. Right now I have an extra large Remington kennel which my lab has room to spare. He is 75# and 23" at the shoulder. How much hight does he need? I am thinking at least 23 so he can stand. I would like one with a drawer but they are either to deep or don't seem to be tall enough for my lab. I have 49" wide, 36" deep and 36" high to play with in the back of my truck. I have had a couple of custom boxes quoted but they are out of my price range.
I would like something like this http://www.owens-pro.com/photobook_dogboxes_popup.php?ID=39 but not as deep. Right now I think this is my best option http://www.aluminum-dog-box.com/aluma-sport-aluminum-dog-box ( the lab model) and either buying or building a drawer for under it.
As for drawers this is in my price range but it isn't as deep as it could be and I feel like I would be loosing usable space. http://www.cabelas.com/cabelas/en/t...m_pla=suv drawer&cm_ite=netcon&rid=2146251080

Does anyone have any experience with this? http://www.owens-pro.com/photobook_dogboxes_popup.php?ID=48 I'm wondering if I could cut it down to my depth. I don't know if I like the idea of wood with a wet dog though. I do have access to hdpe material instead of the wood but wonder if 25" is tall enough being that the doors are even smaller. I wish there was a place I could try before I buy. I am not a rich man but would like to get my truck set up so two dog plus guns and gear could go in the back. I'm tired of shoving another kennel next to mine and having no room for anything but the dogs in the back.

I don't have any experience that would be helpful, but www.gundogsonline.com might be a good site for you to check for used gear that might be cheaper than what you're considering. I've seen all sorts of trailers and dog boxes listed for sale there. You have to click to "hunting dogs for sale" to get to the used equipment listings for some reason... Good luck.

Owens Boxes

I know a couple of guys here in MI who have the Owens aluminum 2-dog boxes, w/ the storm doors etc etc. They hunt from Sept 15- Dec 31 every year. They've been happy with them. I think they also make a top storage compartment, which I think I would like better.

NB

I've got a 2000 Yukon and I hunted with a pare of full size labs all year in this set-up... It's simple, cheap and it worked fine, the bottom containers are from Walmart and have wheels on them so they roll out easy. There's enough room to store a couple cased guns under there as well and between the seats and the kennels there's more room for guns and stuff. The only time I ran out of space was when I had four hunters with overnight bags, it got tight but me made it fit. The back is fliped up in this picture, but it flips down and could be locked. There's enough room behind the set-up to keep many dead roosters!!

TJC3 that is a good price on that box but the kennel portion is just to small for my lab.
MJinMN that is a great link and will keep my eye on that site as I never can have to much stuff.
In the end I think I am going to go your route Husker. I can't find a two dog box that is just right so I am going to make what I need. The other dogs I hunt with are much smaller then my lab so I am going to buy a smaller kennel that fits next to mine. I am going to build a 5" shelf under my labs kennel and will be able to do a 10" drawer on the other side. That way I can slide the guns under the lab and still have a taller drawer for training gear or vests and jackets. I think I was making this all harder then it had to be. I will post some pics when I am all done. Going to get started on it this weekend.

I got a good start on my truck today. I am no cabinet maker but I think it is turning out pretty well. Still need to add handles and carpet but almost done. To bad it had to start raining. Here are some pics. Next will be buying another kennel and putting it all to good use.

Jasper, looks good. I'm thinking about doing something similar in my Expedition to what you and Husker have done. Are the supports under the kennel 2x4's or 2x6's? They look like 2x6's and I was thinking of using 2x4's so it doesn't sit quite so high and yet still have room for guns, etc. underneath.

I used 2x6's and 1/2" plywood. They were the perfect hight for me kennel. Any taller and it wouldn't fit under the door frame. I wanted as much room as possible under the shelf and in the drawer. The drawer is 10" tall outside. 9" high, 25" wide and 45" deep inside. The shelf is 5 1/2" high, 20 1/2" wide and 46" deep inside. Here is a pic from today with two kennels.

Going to water seal tomorrow and then either carpet it or wrap it in vinyl to match the leather in my truck. Either way the inside of the drawer will be carpet or maybe the liners for a tool box drawer. Decisions decisions...

looks great jasper maybe i should do something like that in my wifes minivan no wait then that would mean i had to drive it never mind good job anyway lol

Looks great! Now I'm going to have to do a little up gradeing to mine!

Hey guys, I like what you're doing in the backs of your SUV's here but I just have one concern: I drive a '93 Chevy Suburban and my spare tire mounts inside the back on the driver's side, does anyone have a suggestion as to how I can fit two kennels inside for my dogs with this predicament? I use two large kennels for them and with the tire in the back the kennels won't fit. Any help or assistance is greatly appreciated!!
By the way, I realize I'm resurrecting an older thread but I can't help it. I've been toying with this little dilemma for quite some time now.
