Anybody going spring
turkey?
and a second Tom decided to either not run off or come back in ... that dead Tom laying on the ground
I have done the stay in place, but I prefer to walk around in the woods and call. Sometimes I even take my dogs, but then my odds of getting a bird go way way down.Yes. There is no smarter bird ... no easier bird (notice I refrain from using the words dumb or stupid?) ... each day one does not know what the day will bring.
I like to kill 'em close or let them live to play another day.
Much of my time afield is putting others on a bird ... my last 3 were part of doubles where we had one gun in the blind and a second Tom decided to either not run off or come back in ... that dead Tom laying on the ground - no better decoy. Sometimes my shot was closer than the person who killed the 1st Tom.
Used to run and gun public land and killed quite a few birds that way ... now most of my success is from private land where we tend to stay put in a few locations we have set up.
Yeah I'm sure I'll probably be out there at zero dark thirty as well.sure am. will be set up at zero dark thirty for opening morning.
That's the spiritOf course its turkey season
I got my cousin his first turkey 2 years ago, and in the last 10 or 12 years my calling has gotten a lot better and my woodsmanship so I've been able to call in a few good gobblers for friends, and I get a lot of enjoyment out of doing that because a lot of people have never shot a big gobbler. I've gotten a handful of really big turkeys in the last 15 years. No the last 25 plus years. It's my favorite thing to do, I don't fish very much at all so basically I pheasant hunt and I turkey hunt.Yes. I usually use a cheap slate call, or sometimes a box call. I've never tried any scent, I've never tried a gobble call, I just got real good at yelping and cutting and sometimes I do a little clock that works. So just for curiosity, seems most of you fellas are more west of me. What type calls you running?
And have you had any luck w scents?
Western wood beastWasnt serious by my second question but the calls I am. Also what subspecies you chasing?
Lol what the heck is that?? Now youre messin w me!!Western wood beast
Yeah I actually have a pop-up blind but it's kind of heavy, and it's kind of a hassle, so I don't use it very often.. Sometimes I will make a blind out of brush and tree limbs and just so I can hide myself and get my bowl my bow set up, so I can draw my bow. With a shotgun I still try to get into some kind of coverBox and pot calls for me. When I first started it was diaphragm mouth calls and I did very well with that. Somewhere along the way I developed a gag reflex and the diaphragm calls make we want to puke.
Run & Gun is best with the diaphragm call because it keeps hand and arm movement to a minimum.
I may scout at dark 30, but rarely do I find myself hunting until about 8 or 9 AM. Will do 2-3 sits between say 8 and 2:30. Occasionally will sit in a blind with a good view the last 2 hours of the day. Mostly to pattern the birds but my son has shot one on the last day of the season 10 minutes before sunset ... in the rain.
