Turkey

Turkeys aren't doing well locally, so I put in for a Kansas tag but didn't draw. Didn't get an Iowa tag either. I am thinking about making a trip to VA and pick up a tag.....something different. I've never hunted VA and I can use the time to scout for deer too. I have two kids living in VA so I figure I might as well find some areas to hunt.

Hmmm they spot movement. When i said they had eyes like us i meant daylight/ nightime. Not strength of vision. Thats where diurnal came in. We are classified as that also. You can sit still and theyll come right to you. Ive called birds in twice once wearing a red flannel, the next wearing a red woolrich coat go prove to guys that thought theyd see me they wouldnt. Both times i got flocks of birds to within 20 yards. It was fall both times I scattered flocks and i whistled (kee keed) em in. If you tree stand hunt theyll walk right under you even gun season wearing orange and with not much tree cover. Yes its best to hide but all i wear is beat up jungle fatigues pants snd whatever jacket. None of this fancy camo. Just stay still theyll come right to you. Listen only to show example of time doing this, by 2000s i had mentored over 50 birds out to kids, old folks, vets. Idk how many ive taken personally. I have called birds for my kids wearing blue hoods on their heads and no facemask. I hadnt tokd them to do that. It was cold and we were walking out when we struck the bird. They assumed we were done and it was one of those sit quick deals. Got caught in a cut field and was solid stickers do we couldnt get in. 20 yards again. 7 gobblers came in. Birds never saw us til my oldest raised her gun to shoot. She harvested it
I don't agree with that at all, I always wear camo I always use a face mask and a hat.

I would say Toms either see you or hear you if you get too close no matter how dark it is. Full moon ?

Sometimes you have that gobbler roosted, but you stumble past a hen or a jake or two or three and that can end the gig rather abruptly too.
I remember one time it was just starting to get light, I walked underneath the tree that had a jake in it, and he spotted me and flew out of the tree making a racket, and that alerted all the other birds in the area. I ended up with nothing.

I went out and shot my bow yesterday. I'm trying to formulate a plan on how to hunt this place that I've never hunted before.

In all of my years of pheasant hunting in NWKS I have never run across any turkeys, always figured they needed more tree's than were available in our area. Earlier this week my brother pulled into our land and there were 2 turkeys in the windbreak/homestead area just hanging out.

The closest neighbor with a windbreak is over a mile away and there are no creeks or anything for them to travel up so I have no idea where they came from and no idea how long they would be hanging around.

That's really weird you don't really see him out in Baron areas with no trees they like to be near trees in general. They don't like real thick cover, like pheasants like. They only like certain types of trees, and they like clean water. They like springs, if you can find a spring then you're in.

I tagged this tom this morning shortly before 8am. Stunning weather out there to hunt yesterday and today. I watched about 15 of them parade about 75 yards away, and a lone hen came last, walking much closer, with a tom in tow. Once he saw my Jake decoy, he went bonkers. Dusted him at 25 yards. It's the second best turkey I've ever taken, this is my 20th season.

Nice turkey, I screwed up opening day by getting too close to the roost. That's okay, there is plenty of time.

I had noticed a decline where I go in Nebraska for the last several years. Never had a problem filling, just saw less and less. Last year the population seemed to explode though. Lots of mature toms and tons of jakes. Season starts tomorrow but with the 45 mph winds and temps in the 30’s, we are going Sunday

I just watched a video of some short red-haired guy, and his wife, hunting in montana. Two very annoying people, shooting turkeys. People like that should not have the honor of shooting a turkey in Montana...
