Truly Disappointed

After making my first 2 trips to pheasant hunt, or to Kansas for that matter, I became extremely addicted to pheasant hunting, especially with the quail numbers here in Texas being reduced down to nothing. So after the first 2 trips last year being a huge learning curve for myself and my dogs, I was really hoping this year would be our breakout year and I could get the dogs up there quite a few times and really put some birds in the bag for them. Well the places around DC that I hunted last year have been reduced to stubble, winter wheat, and cattle land. So I went further north and had some, not a lot, of success in November. Since then I haven't been able to make it back up there due to the fact that I'm preparing financially to get married this summer. I'm disappointed in myself because I didn't get my poor dogs back up there again and they only got to hunt wild birds once this year. You guys that get to hunt frequently, consider yourself extremely blessed to be able to enjoy such a wonderful thing as often as you do. On the mornings you're contemplating on whether to get out of bed or not, remember those of us that are stuck many miles away, unable to enjoy the things that are in your own backyard (or state). So much for a "breakout season"........

This was a difficult year to have a "breakout season". Better luck next year.

Btw thanks for coming up and spending some Texas dollars in our state. We Ned it back after we spent all ours down there for the Cotton Bowl.

Its too bad that you weren't able to get back up. But if you had to pick a year to miss making more trips, this was the one.

I am starting a new pup this year. It has really been disappointing how few birds I have been able to get him on. I like to keep a pup in quail for the most part the first season or so. But the quail number around my part of the state are down 70% according to KDWP, and I would say that it is probably worse than that.

Your dogs will pick up where they left off next year. It may take a few bird contacts to get back in the swing, but they will get there.

Good luck on the wedding. Do you think she would like a birddog pup or a shotgun for a wedding gift

ES,

I feel your pain.Like you OK had another dismal year. KS has always been a great choice to escape bad years down here. I saw early on the drought effects on a trip through KS in late summer visiting friends along the way. The birds will recover, but it will take some time. Broaden your bird search into other states, as they also offer excellent opportunities outside the drought areas. Congratulations it sounds like you may have a new hunting partner for next year.

Jake- I also contributed my SIL to KU. She is a softball pitcher up there and I had the pleasure of seeing Lawrence last August

SetterNut- I also like to keep a young dog in birds the first season. Texas hasn't cooperated with that with my young male who could REALLY benefit from a 5 day 10 covey a day hunt. I'm just disappointed and frustrated I didn't get the dogs out more. I wanted to get up there 4-5 times. It'll eat at me all summer that I didn't get them into more wild birds.

My fiancé already wants her own gun, I'm looking into 20ga semi-auto youth models. And she said I can pick the next dog but after that she gets the pick. She really wants a Britt, as do I so it works out!

OKie- I sure hope the birds in Texas, OK, and KS recover FAST. Its extremely frustrating. I'd love to go to SD next year but that is such an expensive trip and long drive it would have to be about an 8 day hunt. It's definitely on my list.

I hope the DC area recovers soon, I enjoy hunting around those areas.

I'm disappointed that the regular season for phez lasts a little over 4 weeks in Indiana. The only hunting after that is going out of state or go to a preserve. The season is Nov. 4 to dec. 18 here. I just checked it on the dnr website.
