Truck Topper system for Bird Hunting

Well this post has been a long time coming. Here is the back story.

I live about 2 hours from where I grew up and from where my folks and just as important, my hunting buddies live. One of my hunting buddies has 2 shorthairs and a three hole box. Great! As long as its just the two of us, but once we add one other we are driving 2 gas guzzlers down the road. Waste of money. I figured that my pickup, 2004 GMC Sierra 1500 Crew cab, can comfortably hold 4 hunting. In my group thats 4-6 dogs to haul. But I still need to be able to haul luggage for the family, plus we always hunt at christmas and need to haul presents.

So, How do I haul 1 dog and lots of stuff 2 hours then unload all the stuff and switch to an efficient hunting rig hauling up to 6 dogs in a short period of time?

Thank you Google and lots of failed ideas. I finally came up with a solution. Here it is.

I ruled out a trailer since my neighborhood has rules against anything being parked outside the garage. So that was out. I thought about any number of dog box designs. The problem with dog boxes was hauling family gear back and forth in the open elements. A topper was the best way to haul our belongings out of the elements. Unfortunately the half ton crew cabs only have a 5.5? beds. A 6.5? bed would have made things exponentially easier. Beyond the obvious extra length you get, you also get extra height. Toppers for 5.5? beds only come in standard cab height. For 6.5? you can get a ?tall? topper.

The next step was many failed attempts. Then some inspiration.

So the base of the idea was formed. Raising the deck of the truck bed allowed for three dogs across instead of just 2 that you can fit in 4? between the wheel wells. Then the storage underneath would work great to haul the hunting supplies. I just need to figure out some sort of way to change the area on the platform from belongings hauling to dog hauling relatively easily. I tried many different ideas in my head. I kept coming back to a welded wire system so that I could still see out to back up. I also liked the idea of being able to look back at the dogs and check on them. Just about the time i was going to buy the metal and start welding I found these.
http://www.tractorsupply.com/product__10151_-1_10001_184495 and they were on sale for half price. They happened to be the exact size I needed.

The wire kennels were perfect I could fold them all up but 1. Fill the truck with family stuff, drive home, unload the family stuff, unfold the wire kennels, load up the dogs go hunting! Great!

Now I am sure some of you are asking how does he plan to fit six of those kennels in the truck? I am glad you asked.

In Photobucket mouse over the little gear shaped object in the upper right hand corner, that should get you a drop down. Click on "Get Links" and that will open a window with 4 links. Click on the "Direct Link" and it should copy it. Then here on your post click on the little mountain icon to open a box that will say "Please enter the URL of your image". Right click in the box and then click "Paste". That should do it.

I simply pulled the back panel out of 3 of the wire kennels. Then you put 3 complete kennels in across the front of the bed. Then stack the 3 with the backs removed behind the complete ones. To load up the dogs you open the door on the front kennel then using a simple 36 stick open the front kennel door. The first dog loads up and walks to the front. Use the stick to close and latch the door. Load up the next dog and close the door. Repeat 2 more times. There you have it 6 dogs in the back of your truck. Some other options are to just use the 3 regular kennels to haul 3 dogs. or To haul 2 dogs turn 2 kennels side ways and they fit nicely across the front and you simply use the side doors to let them in and out. The following pictures show it being set up for 4 dogs.

I will say that i wasn?t totally sold on the idea so I made the platform base uber simple just in case i didnt like the whole concept.

Convenient water storage

Very nice work. I'm going to do the same thing but using a soft topper and plan to camp in the bed of the truck instead of having to haul a tent or my trailer. I've been delaying my project but this post is just the motivation I needed to get to work on it.

Nice set up, I have something like that I use for two Labs. I have done the wire crates but found that when wet labs shake in them all gets wet and muddy. I now have a new topper that is carpet lined and would not want wet muddy dogs shaking getting crap all over the place so solid crates for me. I notice you have a propane heater in your truck. Do you use that for the dogs to keep them warm/

A few times, it has worked well when I have needed it.

I am still trying to come up with a way to use a heated blanket. Unfortunately I have not got a system that works yet.

Jake, nice setup. The only comment I would make is to staple some indoor/outdoor carpet to the top of your box instead of that mat you currently have. I have a similar mat in the back of my SUV. It protects well but slides around too much. I've got to find a way to keep it in place.

I actually have a roll of it in my garage to put on it. I still wanted to see if this was a general system I was happy with before I fancied it up.

The whole system does work well, however my buddy getting a dog trailer has severely limited it's usefulness.

Very Nice!! I had ambitions to do this but we sleep a lot in the back so I ended up with just an Owens Aluminum that I pull out when we want to sleep back there.

I'd like to have seen the framework. What did you put across the top to keep the plywood from sagging? If I had a topper I would be building one of these in my shop right now.

I'd love to have a place to keep my hunting gear loaded during the season instead of taking it in and out of the house each trip.
