Just returned from our first SD trip - Jones County and Lyman County.
Bird numbers appear to be about the same as last year. Hens were somewhat bunched, roosters were far between and required lots of walking; 6-7 miles a day. We were a party of four, with 1 lab at 11years and one Golden at 10. Younger dogs could have made a difference covering more territory. However, my Golden insists on hunting alone and continually required a reprimand. Very frustrating! He does cover a lot of real estate...
Extremely dry conditions made for tough scenting on cripples - no streams or ponds to refresh the dogs.
Spectacular weather for hunting and great fellowship made for a fun trip. Looking forward to a return hunt on Dec. 3.
