I think you can just scatter the seed in a wet area and it will grow. I was going to do the same thing.

In the spring, dig the tubers after the frost has left the ground, and replant in shallow water , under 1-2 inches. Or take cattails seed heads , smash them, and distribute , which would be easier to do a large area.

LOL, Yea I would not want to dig all that slop. I suppose now would be the time to collect seed heads.

1 head has thousands of seeds. Spread them in your wet area. Don't expect much the first year.

Wildlife guy told me to pick the top and break them open. So I picked 4 -5 gallon pails full and spread them on 3-4 acres ground was white hope I get something
He said fall was best when ground wasn't frooze and right before rain or snow. I'll do a bunch in the spring too just in case

Bumping this.. anybody had success doing this? Would like cattails in our retention bonds and boggy areas, however they aren't *always* wet during summers like we recently had with the drought. Is it possible?

In chatting again with my wife, wetlands botantist. Cattails can tolerate dryness during fall and winter periods.

We took the tops off of cattails at a slough and then spread them out across the borders of a couple of dug outs. It took two years to get them established but now they are spreading with each year.
