Training grounds

Does anyone know the training rules and regulations for public land and dogs in MN? I saw that you need a permit to train dogs on public land..it does not say which land you can use other then that you can NOT use WMA's..

I am looking for a field to let my pup loose on to explore some different cover and habitat and have some fun.. I want to do this legally and without taking her on a WMA and having her disrupt some nesting (which is why I presume they want you to stay off WMA's)

Any insight to this would be very helpful

Thanks!

See page 100. Dogs are not allowed off leash on any DNR administered lands until July 15th. Walk-in areas are never open to training.

I called the Morris Fish and Wildlife Office 2 months ago and they told me that I could train a dog on Waterfowl Production Areas anytime, as long as we do not disturb nesting animals. It didn't sound right to me and folks on another forum have told me you absolutely cannot train on WPAs, so better safe than sorry.

Page 102 of the hunting and traping regs. July 15th you can start trainig off leash again. Its still to hot and to early to let the dogs run for me. Game farms open 1st week of september. If you need a spot to do a little dog work i have a .5 acre chunk at my house that you could place a few live birds and let the pup find them.

I am in the same boat. I've turkey hunted at Vermillion Highlands WMA in Rosemount, and called the DNR about the same thing.. Got the same story-- no dogs off leash until after mid-july due to the birds and such.. He told me to look into the state park down in red wing, near the casino. Not sure where you're from or if you've found a spot to let your dog run and explore yet, but that's where I'm planning on going this spring and summer, along with some other spots.

Page 22 of the Handbook says this:

Dog Training
Except as authorized by permit, a person may not train hunting
dogs afield on DNR administered lands from April 16 to July 14. A
person may train hunting dogs afield on other lands.
A person training a dog afield and carrying a firearm may only have
blank cartridges and shells in possession when the season is not open
for any game bird, except by permit. An organization or individual may
obtain permits to use firearms and live ammunition on domesticated
birds or banded game birds from game farms for holding field trials
and training hunting dogs.

Here is the permit you need to get.

We do it every day. Just send in your permit and train on private land year round. Public you can use chukar or pigeons. Not pheasants. And yes not between the dates Zeb said. NO federal land period. Only MN public land can u get a permit.
