Tragic ending to a dog and a warning!

I had a terrible conversation with a friend this week! She told me her 4 year old lab, who was a great family dog had a tragic ending. Seems like the dog found that the neighbor kids were camping out in the back yard and left some food out during the day. The lab went over to visit and found a bag of chips. The dog stuck its head into the bag to eat some chips, inhaled and the bag collapsed around its head and the dog suffocated. Since then they heard on the news of another dog with the same tragic ending. When they took the dog to the vet their vet said this isn't the first time that he had seen this happen. As I write this my kids are eating some chips on the couch while my dogs lay on the floor at their feet. I will be making sure that the bag gets put up before anyone leaves the room. Just a warning to everyone out there. What a terrible way to lose a companion.

How aweful. A friend told me a similar story years ago, except he and a friend were turkey hunting in western ND and camped on a ranchers land. They ate chips around the fire that night and the next morning the rancher came by to tell them his dog died with a chip bag on its head, half way between there camp and his house! The rancher understood it was an honest mistake and they are still allowed to hunt there.

It is really hard to lose a member of the family, as my dogs are. Sorry I have hunted with "robots" and it wasn't fun, it was a job. My lab is a partner, and a family member. I was heart broken when she died, the black lab we have now was a rescue and is just family.
