Hello,
I am Tim and I live in NJ. I am 35 and have always been interested in hunting. I have no family that hunts and only 1 friend who I barely ever see that does. As you can imagine or maybe you can't it has been very hard to get started. Most info or programs out there help to introduce youth the the sport and not the 35 year old rookie. I have taken my hunter education and purchased a firearm as well as a Trius one step clay thrower but that's it. Anyway, I hope to learn and hope to harvest my first bird next season.

Cheers,
Tim

Welcome, Tim.

You might start out by finding a safe, legal, place to practice with your shotgun and thrower. In my experience, getting into the habit of sighting the target, bringing the shotgun up to your shoulder, and tracking the target, then firing at it....is one of the most essential elements of the whole hunting experience.

I say "bringing the shotgun up to your shoulder" because when upland bird hunting, you rarely have the gun already brought up when the bird flushes, so the routine of bringing it up builds muscle memory and trains your eye/brain to automatically follow the target as the gun is brought up.

My best wishes to you.

Welcome! Pheasant hunting in NJ and PA is very popular so you will have ample opportunities. Ask questions..were here to help!

Hi Tim,

Welcome to the site! NJ does a good job of releasing pheasants on it's Wildlife Management Areas.
Feel free to visit and join in the conversations in the Pennsylvania Forum. Some of us also hunt in NJ., and no one is going to judge you on your experience, we all have the same passion.

Thank you everyone. I am lucky enough to live about an hour from the Clinton WMA in NJ. There I am able to set up my trap and practice which is great but having a 1 year old the hardest part is finding the time. I am also lucky enough my parents live in PA so I get to head out there a lot. Looking forward to exploring my options there. Thank you again.

Cheers,
Tim

Doesnt matter where you live. Get a dog and go hunt something! May not find em all the time, but that's why its called hunting and not killing. Welcome to the sight. I like the reads on here almost as much as pointing dog journal.
