Today's Quail hunt

I needed to stay close to work today, so I hit up some WIHA reasonably close to the house. The first place was useless for upland habitat, but it was good exercise for the dogs and kids. A mile's worth of hills each way and no birds. My son thought it was a great place b/c of all the different rocks and gullies so not all was lost.

The next spot was a little better. We stopped at a WIHA spot w/ a pond and jumped a covey. My 15yo cousin and I missed a lot of shots trying to get dialed in. Went around the other side of the place and found another covey about 50 yards into some thick grass. They were coming out of the corn at noon. Had some great dog work on the singles from both coveys, but I had the gun instead of the camera.

We each shot nearly a box of shells:eek: Ended the day with 5 birds, but gained some much needed confidence in our quail shooting abilities on the last few birds. Can't wait till Thanksgiving morning for a C KS combo hunt:cheers:

That's not good man. Sounds like a great place that should be loaded with birds. I'm heading back out W for some quail hunting over the Thanksgiving w/e. There are more quail out there these days.

Glad to hear that you were able to get into the birds. I think the reason they taste so good is because they are so hard to hit. Not all was lost though you were able to take 5 between the two of you and the dogs probably got just as much out of the extra opportunities if not more than the both of you did. Glad to hear that you were able to make it out and can't wait to hear of your Turkey day weekend report. Good luck bud and stay after 'em.

Glad to hear you got into some birds. Quail were all I ever hunted on the family farm as a kid. I've always loved em.
