To young to hunt??

Hello, I'm new to this forum. Looking to learn and share my experiences. I have a five month old GWP. Wondering when is the safe age to take her hunting? Any thoughts? My last dog I took at eight months and things worked out fine. What is the magic age??

As long as you do proper gun exposure before you take the pup hunting, the pup can go pretty much any time now,

I hunted my pup at 6 months with no problems, Just keep and eye on them and don't over do it.

But make sure that you have done proper gun exposure so that you don't create a gunshy dog.

Thanks for the advice

Thanks for the advice. I will let you know how things go this year. I appreciate the feedback. Good hunting to you.

I usually start hunting my dog at or around the six month period, only problem I have had was when my pup got spurred by a wounded pheasant a few years back, had to work with him a little to get over the fear of getting spurred but other than that I think a pup is mature enought to start at that age. Have fun with your pup.

Dogs are individuals so I would disregard the "magic age" theory. I had one dog that responded so poorly to gun conditioning that I didn't do an serious hunting with her until she was two years old. I am a serious believer that gun shy and bird shy dogs are made not born. I have one dog now that is so skittish that she is borderline afraid of her own shadow but loves gunfire. All that being said, if you are looking for a generalization I would echo Setternut's comment, it's about exposure not age.

I agree there is no majical age. In training the pup I think you should get a pretty good idea when they are ready.
