To Chukar or Not to Chukar?

When I lived farther west than eastern Kansas I hunted the Nevada chukar opener every year out of Elko. Haven't been for five years but thinking about doing it this year. 1800 miles one way. But then there are the picons, lamb and Ferrari-Carano merlot at The Star restaurant, not to mention the great hunting. Decisions, decisions . . .

wow!!!!! if it were me, i would hunt my way out and back, if i had the time. you'll be driving through or close enough to some other possibilities, i would guess?

Definitely hunt the chukar. Nothing harder earned or more rewarding than a few devil birds in the bag Imo.

I wish I had more time!

Yes I have. A friend in Elko, when he was younger, went up in the Rubies and got one. One was enough -- alpine terrain made for the toughest hunt ever. Those mountains are so beautiful from the north and west.

One mature rooster would be enough for me, just for a mount of that elusive bird. They say mature roosters can go 10+ lbs and dive off cliffs at 100mph, it would definitely be a hard earned trophy.

Here is a picture for those who may have never known of this bird.

Sounds like you better go while your legs and lungs are young. When's the season? I might be fool enough to drive you. :D

It's a 30 day season starting on labor day. I've been looking at an outfiter that will pack you in and guide you. You can also hunt some other species if your lucky enough to bag your snow bird. Maybe I'll try go next year but there are so many decisions. The bummer is that the dogs wouldn't be able to help bag one.

So what are you going to name your new falcon? :D

No it was just a joke, but those damn coopers hawks are great bird hunters and it would be nice to have some help on such a tough bird.

OK, I have always wanted to get a falcon for pheasant hunting. I figured if I missed a rooster and it got out of range I could just release the bird and yell "TAKE THAT YOU #@$%#."
