Went to Great Bend over the last weekend, third pheasant hunt of the year, first was a limit in Northern Missouri, then two days of limits in Kansas over the second weekend, was hoping for some birds in the late season.
Finally got schedules to line up to take a coworker, his boy (first time pheasant hunter), my dad, a contractor I use a lot, and my pair of shorthairs, Doc the 8 year old that is slowing way down, and Katy, the 5 month old that is speeding up (also a first time pheasant hunter).
Saturday started out slow. Weather was great, some clouds, some sun, moisture on the ground, slight breeze, beautiful day. By 11:30 we'd hunted hard and seen a handful of hens at several hundred yards. Not to encouraging.
Things picked up though in the next few fields, had 4 roosters by lunch at 1. Finished the day with 9 in the bag, and a handful more that we didn't seal the deal on. Jarrod the newby 16 year old got some shots in on his own birds, including a solo over some cattails. Katy the other newby, didn't get any points, and the tall grass had her whipped most of the day, but she did trail a few birds that flushed out wild, and had a rock solid point on a dead bird that she didn't see fall.
Sunday started out much better, the first field saw us take 3 birds, but we saw many many dozen flushing out wild, its amazing how you can watch so many birds land in such a small space, and 5 guys and two dogs can't get them up once you get there. Ended up with 5 for a couple hour hunt on Sunday, everybody got some shots. Needed more blockers a few times, but they'd probably have just flown somewhere else then anyways.
Doc the old dog did his usual wonderful tracking job on running roosters all weekend long, several solid points without a camera in hand. Katy had a solid point on a hen as well, which got the excitement going for me as much as it did for her.
