This mornings quail hunt (pic heavy)

We got kind of a late start this morning and didn't get out until 11 AM. Obie found his first covey within 30 minutes of leaving the truck. Over the next 1 hour he found two more coveys and we worked on some singles and small groups over that period of time as well. He's really doing well and I am as excited as can be with how he has done the past few times out. To be fair I will say that I have an idea of where these coveys hang out at to a degree so it's not like he is just magically making birds appear. But, to find those coveys in that amount of time for a dog that is 13 months old so I feel is awesome. His retrieving is what I am really impressed with. I winged one and it sailed over a hundred yards out into the pasture and he went and hunted it up and then came running back with it hunting me up to deliver our prize.

His first covey 30 minutes out of the truck.

This would be a group of about 3 or 4 birds out of his second covey he found.

When I stepped in front of the brush this is what came up. No birds were hurt in the photo!

A retrieve to hand.

Walking in on a single find.

Very intense. The third covey.

Could have easily taken a limit but didn't want to dog the birds too bad and I also had my fair share of misses!

Steve I took your advice and kept on taking him.

He learned to handle the wild birds all on his own. I wish I could get his brother to follow suit as quickly as he has.

Thanks for sharing! Great looking pup and nice pic's! he sure looks like a million bucks!

Duckn,

Got to love it when the young dogs make you look good. I never remember the bad days, but the good ones are burned in my mind. Looks like you brought that pup along a long way.

What is his breeding?

See if that works. I know very little about Pointer bloodlines. So the ones without titles I have no idea who they are or their accomplishments.

Oh I remember plenty of bad ones (days) with him this year! Matter of fact more of those than good ones. It just all of the sudden came together for him.

His brother is an entire different story though. That boy, well, thats about all I have to say about him. He will eventually come along though.

bragging

gotta be careful here. bird dogs are just like kids. soon as you brag about how smart and wonderful they are they go and do something stupid. glad your mutt had a great day.

cheers

All of us that have had dogs know that you have train wrecks from time to time down the road. But when you have a pup that the lights turn on, that's worth talking about.
Especially, if you have pictures.

No bragging going on here (ok maybe a little). Several on here to include Setternut are familiar with my pups from the time I got them from Cobblestone, (who is a UPH member) to the time I first started them on pigeons. Progressing to released quail and then onto the woes of busting wild birds like mad dogs.

Setternut, onlyapointer, and oldandnew have all given me great advice about the dogs and how not to give up on them because their lights will turn on given time, just get them into birds and keep taking them. I think I literally wore out a pair of boots this season with them.

Can't begin to tell you how many miles I walked this season only to watch a dog run through a covey of quail. Sometimes he would point for a bit and other times he wouldn't even slow down. His brother rarely slows down.

I just wanted to show the photos of him and how he has progressed this season from running through covies of quail to pointing them and standing his birds.

I have had a heck of a time with the two dogs from day one. From having to overcome medical issues with them (one vet told me to put them both down), to running through birds like a fire over the grasslands. Had I put them down I would never have enjoyed this past weekend with Obie that I did.

These two little guys have been through quite a bit and are now truly "family" to us at our home.

I started out the season by running each pup with my older pointer who I aquired two falls ago. But, soon figured out that when I ran a pup with him he would not hold a point. He knew the pup would bust his birds. Had to quit taking him. He to has suffered this year in the way of not hunting as much.

Lots of work to do this spring and summer with them both. It's been fun to watch the progression and sometimes the lack of and these little guys have given me a greater understanding of pointing dogs. They have been forgiving of me with my training and I have been forgiving of them as well.

Duck,
Talking about your pups progress is not really bragging. You are telling the good with the bad, and that helps those with the same issues.

I think Indy nearly walks on water. But last year out in Montana, after several days of great dog work, he blew a gasket when we were on 100 sharptail. He ran 1/2 a miles down a tree row with birds flying everywhere.

That's one sweet pup you've got there. Every dog I've ever had pretty much "learned it on there own". I take them out and shoot the 22 and then the shotgun until they don't even look at me when I fire. After that, it's just take em hunting and learn how to work together. My brittboy came along way this year. I'm afraid my old butt went a little the other way. We shall give it one last try sometime this week. My 2014 resolution is to get in better shape. Wish me luck
