The Ol' 28

I guess after the last 2 seasons of just shooting the 28 and seeing that it can take Pheasants all day long, my Buddy just brought home a used Beretta 686 Silver Pigeon 28 gauge for $ 1100!! Finally someone I can borrow shells from!!!!! LOL!!!:10sign:

never having researched a 28 - how does it compare to a .410 ? size/power/bird take down. Or, what does it compare to?

I reload everything but shotshells!! 15.99 is hard to beat for good shells!! as far as power, it is just as powerful as most anything, just less pellets!! I have yet to chase a cripple!!! With that said, I have only just begun my journey!!! But it shoots so well for me!!! One weekend I went 6 birds on 7 shots!! Great for doves and I have yet to get into the Quail!!! Made some great shots on Blue Grouse this fall, so I have all the confidence I need!!! Was skeptical at first!!!! But, I believe now!! Dream to carry and shoot!!!!

Gotta love the ol' 28. Mine is a quail gettin little gun but it's put down it's share of wild roosters too. It just feels right in my hands. I would say it's more comparable with a 20ga than a .410. They make up to 1oz loads though I prefer 3/4oz myself. B&P makes a 15/16oz load that my gun throughs nice patterns with but at just over 5lbs they can kick pretty hard, nice load for roosters though where you don't shoot many shells per day.

been looking for the exact same. Where did your buddy find it?

some would say the .410 is not a true shotgun but an elongated pistol cartridge with shot in it. its hard to fit 3/4 oz of shot in a 3 inch 410 shell.
i looked through one of the" advantages" manual and theres dozens of loads for the 28 with 3/4,7/8 & 1 oz loads for the 2.75" 28 ga.
28 ga shells historically were meant to run kinda hot.many loads in the book are running over 10 k and several over 11,000 psi.
seems like there was some talk about the 3/4 oz 28 ga being a "squared" load.
the 28 is a little hot rod in other words, kinda the 22-250 of the shot gun world.
i just checked the golf bag and it seems i dont have one ot those, that's strange, something I dont have one of. huh......

All I can say is that it works very well for me and is a pleasure to shoot!!! Seems to be making a come back!!!!

I shoot my granddad's old SxS 28 for dove and quail... Absolutely love it!

Your photos shows why you love that gun!

I love my SxS 28 too. For pheasants I'm using #5 at 7/8oz and doing fine. For quail 3/4oz 7 1/2 shot.

Sweet to carry, well finished and not too fancy that I worry about actually using it.

Here's mine, only had it for 3 seasons and worn most of the case coloring off but she's a shooter.

A few years ago when there were birds in ks i brung two buddys out to pheasant hunt and all they did was cripple birds with them pea shooters the next trip they brung 12s lol Im just not a beleiver in 28s for phez but for quail i think they would be awesome, i would like to have one like yours bleu its really nice

Wonderful for doves and quail. And there's not a better gauge for preserve pheasants or any other preserve bird for that matter. I want a bigger gauge for wild birds, however. Losing or crippling even one wild bird with a 28 is one too many.

I am certainly more careful when I shoot with my 28. Not sure I have to be but makes me more disciplined. Perhaps that's a good thing.

I wish I had a nickel for every time somebody has written that the 28 kills better than it should. Must be something to it and someday I'll give one a run.

You can get 1 1/16 ounce loads for it from b+p...
