The newbi thread. Post your newbi huntin dog advice!!

I've read all your posts and you might like a Vizsla. The have a great temperment, great pointers, great retrievers and I've heard they are also multi-purpose (waterfowl) although I have never tried that as I'm not a waterfowl hunter. Mine does have webbed feet and loves to go in the water. Not ideal for extremely cold water as they have a very short coat.

My vizsla is a PERFECT pet! Tolerates other animals (and I live on a farm), is awesome with my kids (3 and 6) and is just a great companion. We call him the "velcro dog" because he wants always be touching someone.

He's a very close hunter, so if you're more interested in a dog that will really range out there, I don't think a Vizsla is for you....although I"m no expert! They might be able to be trained to be more forward hunting. Personally, I want a dog that hunts WITH me, not one that I have to hunt FOR! Thats just me though.

I do use an ecollar on him, but he is VERY sensitive to it! I'll bet I've only actually shocked him 6 times...and that was for ignored commands by my girlfriend. He tends to only listen to me, so that's what we've been working on. Ecollars are VERY effective....when used right! You can also ruin a dog with them (which I have seen).

With his coloring, I always have an orange, chest protector vest on him. http://www.cabelas.com/product/Hunting/Dog-Supplies/Vests-Boots|/pc/104791680/c/104715180/sc/103906980/Cabelas-Ripstop-Chest-Protector/748637.uts?destination=%2Fcatalog%2Fbrowse%2Fhunting-dog-supplies-vests-boots%2F_%2FN-1104248%2FNs-CATEGORY_SEQ_103906980

I like his short coat because I'm not spending hours picking or cutting burrs out of him! But that makes him a little less tolerant of ultra cold weather! He likes to sleep INDOORS! And he's too prissy to sleep on some hard floor....no, he needs a nice, soft couch or bed! Good thing I'm not married!

Just something to think about.....do some more research on Vizsla's if this sounds interesting to you!

Good luck! Always fun to be researching for a new dog!
