The New Renter.......

So get this....I thought I would be neighborly and work with guy across road to rent/crop my west farm this year. here is the sequence of events.

-with early spring the volunteer weeds were getting pretty tall like 1-2' so I requested he spray those to uphold his what is in the contract.

- so he sprays and manages to kill 1 whole row of the new trees (1/4 mile of trees) I planted and proceeds to tell me it is my fault since I required him to spray. I will have to order new trees for all the dead ones and hand plant them myself.

- On last visit out I see he must have sprayed again and managed to kill a good deal of grass I had planted on the 14' outside buffers rows.

- That same trip I noticed he had mowed my road ditch too which I did not want mowed until after Sept 1. I can understand why he did this him being cattle farmer and all. I assumed he could understand why I would not want it bailed being in the pheasant business and all:confused:

Hard not to want to crop that ground myself next year or at least get a new renter.

I'd at the very least get a new renter since his practices certainly don't align with what you're trying to achieve.

A tenant will usually do as little and spend as little as possible. I think you got the usual tenant.

well Chris, i guess this guy could best be described as an asshole...nothing else seems to come to mind at the moment.

How close were these weeds you asked him to spray to your buffer strip and trees? What kind of weeds were they and what crop were they in?

He seemed nice enough when I talked to him and the neighbors used him before. BUT... some of my friends from town did not have good things to say about him.

spraying the trees was an unconscious act, good luck with a better renter next time. planting trees by hand is hard work, i have done it before too.

I know nothing of the situation other than what has been written, but I would bet that it was drift that got the trees not direct spraying.

i would agree.......my point is you have to be smart enough or care enough to avoid the effects of drift.....if you spary at all, you understand this.

Operator was told the edge of buffer zone was 14' off the last tree row. He even planted within the buffer zone and then over sprayed onto the grass in my buffer zone to make sure he got weeds on other side of his crop.

I ended up mowing a row of his beans to redefine the buffer zone. He won't like that either.

Yes the trees were killer on drift but only because he did not observe the buffer zone and sprayed to close to trees.

U, apply for the movie rights . . . National Lampoon, "Summer Renter." Seriously, sorry about your travails. Having experienced too many house renters who turned out to be a POS, I got out of the rental business.

Is there an "emily's list" for cash renters? I find it hard to believe people wouldn't have warned you about this guy. Did you ask? Did you listen?

Fool me twice shame on me........if you read earlier in the thread you will see where I had gotten positive feedback on him from neighbor.

In rural areas, seldom will folks, when put on the spot, say anything negative about another. Part of getting along where everybody knows everybody more or less. Gotta get info like that in a more sly way.

Good advice Jim. Thanks! Think I will plant milo next year and not get any government assistance on it or crop insurance.

Even in these drought conditions milo would have produced a crop for both cash and birds this year.
