Thanks to Landowners

Do you guys ever give gifts to landowners that allow you to hunt their property? What is a good gift (other than a bottle of alcohol)? I'd like to give guys a little something every now and then, but don't have any good ideas. Last year we gave a couple guys gift cards to Home Depot.

While I think that this is a great idea I haven't had any success giving gifts to landowners. I always offer some of the birds that we shoot but they always refuse, my "farmers" don't drink so alcohol is out of the question. They tell me just to be careful and enjoy the hunting.

Something I have given is a good knife. I have given sheath knives, fixed blade and folding. The farmer/ranchers just loved them.........Bob

Great comment!

Just to clarify; I'm not talking about new guys who's doors I knock on, but guys I have known for a few years. I just want to know how much I appreciate them letting me hunt their land.

I gave the landowner that I hunt on ever year a gift for the first time this season. It was a basket of jelly made by a local facility and the stuff isn't marketed nationally. His wife seemed to like it, but I don't think it earned any points with him. I think all he really wants is a meaningful thank you and some respect for his land. He refuses to accept lease offers and lets a lot of people hunt. If he wanted something in trade, he knows he can get it. I don't think I'll take another gift out for him, but I'll take something for his wife. Besides, she's the one that drives around all day running people off their land!

Well, being from Wisconsin, of course I have Cheesemakers in the family. We usually send landowners who grant us permission to hunt their land a nice selection of cheeses. I could be biased ;) but I think my cousins make the best cheese anywhere. Feel free to use them anytime. I'm sure they'd appreciate the business. Here's their website:

Just remember Chad... when you cut the cheese, always blame the dog. :D

I frequently have given a very nice pair of leather gloves or a large ham to landowners who have allowed me the privilege of using their land.
