This is my first thread, i just joined, and wanted to thank everyone on this site for all of the good information.
I live in central Wisconsin and bought a black lab last june when i started training her it was only going to be for duck hunting. one day my brother got one of his crazy ideas to actually train her for pheasants too. We were right in the middle of bow season when he thought of this, he shot his buck early and had alot of time on his hands. He found a game farm near by and set up a ''hunt'' for about a week after thanksgiving. I wasn't to sure about it but figured why not just give it a try. She took to it like a pig to mud! 2 weeks later my brother and I started to plan a hunting trip to anywhere with pheasants. Kansas won for 2 reasons its season was open later and had alot less snow than Iowa.
He also found this forum and started reading some of the threads. He did all the scouting he could short of flying down there. We planned a short trip in the middle of january. When the day came to leave I was so excited the dog and I slept on the couch and waited for my brother to pick us up on the front porch. When we got to Smith Center 13 hours 2 bathroom breaks and one nutty pup later i was almost to excited to sleep.
The next morning we got up and headed out to a few of the WIHA's my brother looked at via satelite and the WIHA atlas we got when we purchased our licenses. We got out of the truck and heard roosters crowing and started in that direction. No success in that particular area but we did see a couple. That afternoon we were walking around in T-shirts and my brother missed when 3 roosters rose in front of him the dog and I were about 100+ yards away and the shot sounded so strange to me I wasn't even sure he had shot. He missed and we kept moving around eventually we did hit one. We learned that wild birds are a little hard to hit than the ones on the farm.
We were there for only 2 days and only got 1 bird but we both agreed to come back in november. We hunted Walkin areas only and saw 30 to 40 birds. We both had a blast!
If it wasn't for this forum i don't think i would have ever gone to Kansas for anything. My brother and i will both be using this screen name. Im Scott And his name is Aaron we will make sure you know who is talking at the end of our posts.
THANKS again,
