TEK Tracking/e-collar from Sportdog

Two seasons with the Garmin and I have to say I rarely hunt upland birds without it anymore.

Works great with my Brittanys in cattails and higher grass. Signal is strong from a long distance away and/or close. No more calling for the dog before looking to see if she is on point !

The tracking is actually kind of fun to see the distance the dog put down on a walk or the day. You can also mark your spots (truck, camp, points).

In the woods the signal does become lost at times if your dog ventures into heavier timber or balsam forests. Young clear cuts seem to present little problems. I have notice the unit self can lose signal and get distorted when you are in heavier woods.

You can also use the GPS to mark the X on ponds, points or grain fields when hunting ducks and geese.

I found one on sale, plus coupon and picked the unit and collar up for $470 dollars less credit card dollars ... end up spending about $350 cash out of my pocket ... so there are ways to save.

TEK 1.0 Collar

I have had 2 issues with my collar in the 18 months I've owned it. Both times Sportdog came through and fixed the collar at no charge (it has a 2 year warranty). I am concerned that after 2 years, I will need to look at another option if it keeps breaking down. Works great when it is working. Unfortunately not a very reliable product.

thanks shorthairs4life... if u dont mind me asking what are the issues that needed to be fixed???

ill most likely get the beeper and a hearing aid for my old man if we have any issues hearing the beeper once the dogs on point....

maybe if i let my dog just roam wear ever i will get a gps collar for now i like my dog to work close especially in the grouse woods i like my dog in site

TEK Issues I Experienced

The first issue was the GPS stopped picking up, so I sent it in and they fixed that. The second issue was the battery to the collar died.

GPS not picking up was a big problem, the battery not so big. The battery not lasting at least a couple years seems odd.

The piece of mind these collars bring to the hunt are great and I love them when they work. The GPS collar brought a few additional birds to the bag last season for sure.

Anybody using a GPS tracking collar in the woods, say like in northern Minnesota? How do they work in wooded areas?

I know a guy who has 5 Garmins for his bear hounds, he runs in big forest areas of northern wi...said its the best thing he's ever got for his style of hunting and his hounds safety.
Last week he watched his lead dog slow from the rest of the dogs and stop moving on his handheld, knew something was up and headed towards the dog, walked right into the forest a half mile found his dog with a broken back leg, carried him out to the truck and drove to the vet. Wouldn't have happened like this without that GPS system

I kill a lot of ruffed grouse most years. My Britts hunt relatively close but sometimes move on running birds or the cover is simply thick.. I have had my dogs completely "invisible" and on point just 25 - 40 yards away. Bell goes silent.... I for one will take the Garmin over a beeper collar any day.

Once again I bring this thread up from the dead. :)

Just curious if anyone has had anymore experience with the TEK 1.0??

I have an opportunity to purchase a NIB TEK 1.0 GPS Tracking & E-Collar Combo for under $300. At that price I don't know how I can pass it up.

I know the TEK is not a Garmin and won't do all the Garmin will. But I like the simplicity of the unit and it provides the information I'm looking for. In addition, I can remove the e-collar module and run the GPS alone if I want to.

Mine is still working well since the second time sending it in to be fixed. They have a 2 year warranty and I needed to send mine in twice under warranty. I've had it for 2 years now. When it works it's great.

It's been a couple of years but I'd like to resurrect this thread one more time.

I'm again thinking about a GPS collar and am leaning toward the Sportdog TEK 1.0 for a couple of reasons. 1. Price 2. The simplicity of the unit. I don't need all the functions of a Garmin Astro or Alpha.

However, I also have a couple of concerns:
1. The size of the unit. Would the GPS + e-collar unit be quite bulky on a Brittany?
2. I know when this unit first came out the vibrate and tone alerts on the handheld unit when the dog goes on point were quite weak. Has Sprotdog improved this?

There are SportDog speakers at Pheasant Fest ... you can also stop by their booth too.

The regular size Garmin tracking collars are fine on my 32 pound female and on my dogs when they were pups.
