SW Kansas Hunt

Had a great hunt the last couple of days, and met some really nice people up there in Kansas. I started out on public land the first day and got a limit, but me and the dog both worked our butts off for it. After the hunt I was driving around and saw what looked like a great spot (turned out to be unproductive... show ya what I know!), but I knocked on a couple of doors to track down the owners. Got them located and went and talked to the farmer. He was an extremely nice man and in exchange for a roll of jalapeno and cheese venison summer sausage, he turned me loose on all of his land. Second day I had a great hunt all on private land. Being that it was just me and my dog, I still had to work hard for birds, but there were more birds to work with. On my way out I thanked the farmer again for letting me hunt on him and gave him another roll of sausage. I love meeting new people when I am in a strange land, and you Kansanians are top notch! Beautiful country up there. The only complaint I have is you boys need to stop farming so many sand burrs! I don't know what ya'll do with all of them, but I am suspecting you dump them in the fields for the nonresidents!

I didn't want your exact spot, I was just curious because I live in SW Kansas, Liberal to be exact.

Na, they even catch us residents. Opening day, 1st field very embarrassing for me; thought I was going to have to pick up my 80 lb 2 yr old & carry him through the field. I was telling everybody, "he really can hunt he's just got tender foot". I mean entire field was absolutely terrible.

By the way, nice photo.

That is a great picture. Glad you had a good hunt. I can promise you that all of us lifelong KS residents have plenty of sandburrs to deal with, we don't save them for you. Maybe I'm a sucker, but I've got an old lab (11) who I carried about 50 yards out of a field due to burrs this year. I figure she's done me enough favors over the years that I owe her.

you see these nice looking large grass fields- then 40-50 mph winds come up- stuff blows- burrs blow- farmers dics the grass stuff- burrs just spurt up all over

but- and here's the real joke- pheasants love the burr fields- never had it so good- I could go out my door and get a limit everyday- course the field was 1/2 mile by 1/2 mile

want some pictures that even the coyotes stayed out of- but the Britt's are locked up

Looks like you had a great hunt:coolpics:. I pulled a ton of those darn things outta my boy this year, seemed he scented better when he had one or two of them in his paws to slow him down:D

Boy I know the feeling. My dog Georgia jumped out of the truck before I could get her booted and landed right in a pile of burrs. I felt like a bad dad seeing her limp around. What do ya'll use to boot your dogs? I have bought boots before from Cabelas or BPS, but they always seem to get lost or they'll shake them off in the field. I bought a pack of baby socks and duct tape and just taped her up. Seemed to work OK, but she wasn't always crazy about holding still while I taped her.

Anyone tried the ones at dogbooties.com? There only like $2.50/paw.

yes, they work very well.....the Toughtek 9000 boots will turn sand burrs, i haven't tried the cordura 1000's, but suspect they might be tough enough to turn them as well.....the lighter cordura count boots are more flexible and OK for normal use or in snow.....good boots, stretch velcro fasteners work well and the boots stay on well. dogbooties.com
