SW Iowa Upland Hunter

Hello all, my name is Scott and have been hunting upland game well, since I was my Grandfathers Flusher in the 70's. Now that I am Retired from the Army, my wife and I hit the brush with out Wire Haired Pointing Griffon every fall across Iowa and South Dakota. I consider it a Gentlemen/Gentlewomen sport and am just to old to be a power hunter. It is not about the kill but about watching the dog work and the over all experience of being in the field.

I hope that we all have another safe and productive season.

Welcome, I worked in Anita for a couple years some time ago. Bought a lot of bulls from the outfit in Bridgewater.

any rumors of how SW Iowa will be fairing this year? I have relatives around that area and I may take the plunge on the expensive Iowa out of state hunting license.

I have not had the opportunity to run the dog yet but, if the DNR numbers are right, we should be ok. One of the nice things about SW Iowa is the there are not a lot of upland hunters any more and those that I do run into don?t have dogs. Over the years, we have done ok. If you get a chance to come this way and wish to hunt, let me know.

I can tell you that last week I was gunning at a field trial near Grinnell....first day in the field we saw more pheasants than we did planted chukars AND we saw covey of huns

That is great news Rascal. I have a farm near Grinnell that I have hunted once since I bought it. Put it in CRP two years ago and it looks fabulous from what I've been told. Maybe I'll go back this year!

Welcome!

On this forum you will find some great people and friends! Welcome to the sport we all love Uplandhunter! Roosterslayer, if you need someone to check on your place in Grinnell pm me and I will make sure to put it on my hit list this year.

I believe we will see a small uptick in bird numbers this year. Let me caution that it is small and there are still areas "void" of pheasant. If you have lived and hunted Iowa as long as me you know that is not the norm.

That said, any increase is welcomed by this hunter. Welcome to the forum!:)
