Surprise flushes

Today is the first day of fall fellas:thumbsup:. I know we're chomping at the bit waiting for the pheasant season to start but in the mean time we can still play nice.;)

I had a nice surprise flush just the other day at work. II'm an electrician by trade, but I also double as our company's excavator operator. I was walking through the brush with the representative from the utility company to lay out where we needed to dig a trench for his underground service. We got going about 50 yards down the side of the property when two mourning doves burst out of the weeds right underneath the utility guy, knocking him on his ass. We both had a good laugh!
 
I was really enjoying this thread and all this knit picking and the thread went quite. Here's a story about my first pheasant. As stated before we haven't had wild pheasants in pa since I was able to hunt so I was hunting not much going on until the truck drove around with a loud speaker saying do not shoot until the truck has left the area. So the truck goes around the corner and here comes on floating right over head and on shot and I have my first pheasant in the bag. My buddy had to chase his down through a briar thicket to get his.
 
We had walked a waterway last year and the dogs were birdy multiple times. We imagined that once we got to the end of the ditch it would be the "motherlode", but it was not. My friend and my son decided they would take another ditch back toward the road and I would retrace back to the truck to pick them up.

I was taking the "shortcut" through a cut corn field with 25# of mud on each boot cussing my decision when a rooster got up out of small tuft of foxtail grass about the size of an end table. Pretty sure I felt the air off his wings when he took flight...So I finally made it back to the truck with an extra 53#. 25# on each boot and a 3# bird in the bag.:thumbsup:
 
November 1995. Livingston County IL; Some family members and I were driving to our next hunting spot. My brother told us to stop the van so he could get out and run through the ditch:confused: Okay.:rolleyes:

We stopped. He got out and started running through the ditch. No gun or anything. Within a 30 seconds or so a nice rooster flushed. Man, that bird flew like the wind. The next thing we know, the bird's wing popped out of socked some how:confused: We had never seen something like that before. Anyway, he came crashing down to the ground and ran.

My lab Brandi was watching the bird from the van so I let her out. She ran full speed towards the bird--at that point the rooster was running as fast as he could through a picked be field. Brandi caught up to him, then brought him back to hand alive.

That was a good day. We saw a lot of birds that day. Shot a few too. Good memories:)

Years ago my buddy and I went pheasant hunting and neither of us had a dog so he brought his son?s female black lab. Driving up there I asked how will she do, and he said we will see, she has never hunted before. Lol. So we start hunting and my buddy has her on a thirty foot rope and actually she did great and we were getting birds. She was flushing them really well for never doing it before. At one spot we had them flushing everywhere and had 3 roosters down. I stayed by a ditch and marked the birds best I could and never moved. The dog got them all and actually brought two to me. I stood in the same spot and we had water and watered the dog. My buddy grabbed the rope and dog that was running around us. We said lets go and I took one step and a rooster exploded at my feet. How it sat there with people and a dog darn near standing on it for probably 10- 15 minutes was amazing. Oh yeah I got it to fill my limit.
