Skipped work yesterday and took the boat, Pudelpointer and gun over to a Lake about 15 minutes from my house. There are a couple of islands on the lake and I see some birds lurking around there on occasion. A little pressure and they'll hide out there.
Fished the moon cycle and came up with one 22" walleye. Wind a little brisk so hit the island about 2:30. Mazzie froze up as we passed a thicket and as I started to go in the bird got up in my face and went straight up over the thicket, where the wind hit it and it rocketed off. I held off shooting as it was too close, but sent a futile shot at it after just as it cleared the thicket.
Moved on and quickly pointed a hen after some good tracking. Mazzie then went into another bunch of trees. She was coming my way when another rosstie busted out, not offering a shot.
Pointed another hen before reaching the end of the island. Mazzie hit the swamp grass and cattails at the waters edge and the beeper went to hawk scream. The bird flushed, headed low over the water, but he didn't make it when hit by the #4 steel. Mazzie made a swift water retrieve.
Hit the other island and did not see another bird. The larger island is only about 200 yards long, the other half that. They pulled the dock out at the boat ramp just before I arrived so may have to wait for freeze-up to get out there again.
There were 5 roosters in my backyard next to the neighbors corn. I sure hope they get it out before the seasons over!

The best of both worlds

Buck: That's awesome, a combination fish and hunt. A few weeks ago I head north to the gettaway place. Bird hunted all morning, fished in the afternoon, bird hunted Sunday morning and returned home to play a 2 man best ball match. Shot a few birds, but cold front made walleye fishing tough and I didn't catch a thing. 2' whitecaps and it was so cold, I spilled some water from the minnow bucket and it froze on the boat's carpeting. Lost the match, too, 2&1, but what a weekend! Life is good!

Did not keep the fish. The lake is trophy only-24" minimum, one fish. They are trying to keep the bullheads down, and it is definitely working. Never-the-less, I ate walleye as I had the wife get some out before I went.
Being it is so close, I do not spend much on gas and other than going across the small lake, I use the electric trolling motor 95%. You can all congratulate me for being so green!
