Sunday Hunt (Sort of)

The dogs didn't like not getting out for a week so I took them for a run on Sunday morning armed with a Canon. I'm glad I got my wife a camera for Christmas last year. It didn't take long for the dogs to find a few quail hanging around. Three birds flushed at first and then Blitz found a single that held better than the others.

There was a total of about 5 quail in this group.

We moved on and the dogs were in hunt mode after finding those first quail. After a bit the dogs were almost a 100 yards in front of me and I snapped these pictures:

I was expecting a hen pheasant to flush since the bird held so well. But instead this is what I was able to get with the camera:

I was pretty excited to see these birds. There were about 12-15 birds in this group of quail. The sound of the flush sounded great and I was glad to get some pictures.

We moved on and Blitz had another point with a back from Nittany. It may be hard to see the dogs.

I walked in towards Blitz and I was able to snap these photos:

The dogs ended the hour run with a find on a single quail at the edge of the woods:

It was a great way to spend a Sunday during deer season. I'm glad I was able to get the dogs out for a bit.

Can you shoot quail in that area?
Up your shutter speed and you should get better action shots. It should work in those bright conditions.

No, there is no open season for quail in this area. These birds started out in a johnny house but have been on their own for a month or so. There are not any wild birds in the area to work the dogs on (except for woodcock) so I work them on these birds. It sure is better than nothing.

Ah man.... you got it bad don't you Buddy! lol. Good post, thanks for sharing.

Thanks for the comments. It was a good day for me and the dogs. I would rather leave the gun at home than Nittany and Blitz.

No wild birds? Looks like a lot of good cover. Maybe the released birds will take hold some day. Looks like a great day to me.:10sign:

I had a chance to run the dogs again today. They found a small covey of 5 quail together early. Then we got some singles out of a sorghum field. A total of 6 birds came out of this section one at a time. The dogs had a few points in the sorghum but the birds were running a lot in there. We finished up with another find on the first 5 birds.
The last point of the day:
