Sub-Zero Temps Worth The Trip?

Neither have I. They start working and running and panting even when its 10 degrees out. I can see the point of a protective vest around barb wire, but a heated one is just silly.

My dog lays outside in the snow when its below zero for cryin' out loud.

I'll take single digits over 65 degrees every single time.
Yeah, but not sub zero.btw orange is not required.

Which by the way if there are any dog crate manufactures out there. A double crate length-wise with doors on each end that would fit length-wise in backseat of most trucks I think would be a great product.

I was in Northern Central SD in Mid-December and hunted in 50mph winds with negative 20 wind chills. I was concerned about the same things. Given I only had 3 days to hunt, it wasn't really an option to stay inside. The hardest part was keeping my hands warm. It wasn't terrible, though, as I would just rotate keeping my hands in my jacket pockets with hand warmers. The rest of my body was okay with the gear I had (head to toe in Merino Wool, down jacket, outer shells).

My dog seemed fine as far as being warm. She's a Springer and has a little bit of a winter coat on her. The biggest pain was the ice that accumulated on her paws. I used a whole can of Musher's Secret but it just kept piling up, sometimes making her paws bleed. If I had to do it again, I'd try boots on her.

The problem is If you try to put two individual crates in the backseat they will be too long. I actually had to cut mine down to pull it of

That is a great idea for a 2-dog hunter. Do you put anything over the truck's door panel? My GSP used to chew the seat belts if I left him alone in the truck (no crate) too long. I now just don't take him along on non-hunting errands, if I will need to leave him alone in the truck. In this case I would be afraid he would eat the door panel if left long. Well, he is a GSP with obvious separation anxiety.

Yes weathertech makes a product that slips into window slots that protects door panels to a degree but any serious chewer you would put crate door on.

Not all dogs have the same coats. Labs don't get as cold when hunting in cold weather.

@FlushingSetters1724 - they changed the forecast for next week dramatically. Some single digits Monday and Tuesday, but no negatives. And all the way up above freezing Saturday. This is NC east river though, so may vary where you are. I am guessing it will be much warmer everywhere though.

I’ll be out there the 8th-12th, was hoping for some snow, but you can’t have it all. I’m just happy to get my dogs out on some wild birds again. Wisconsin’s season is over this Sunday, and the stocked birds are basically gone. We’ve managed to find a limit out in SD every day we’ve put the effort in. Hoping to keep the streak alive but I know what birds are left are pretty damn smart.

Often I disparage my Setter’s turbo hunt speed but she’s good in the house and truck. Very durable. Listens well and great with people and dogs. And she just loves to go hunt. Man if I could just downshift her out of road gear and get her to find down birds…

Good looking dog too. I showed my wife, because he looks like Honey's dad.
