Stump Killer

I'm cutting down a grove of decidous trees. Most of the stumps are 12-22 in. wide. What can I put on them to kill them and when?

Tordon RTU works really good on trees and I think it can be used about any time. Maybe someone else will chime in. I've used it in the fall with great results.

D8!!! Tordon RTU is the stuff. You want to treat them immediately after treating. Remedy and Crossbow also work well. On the larger stumps, you only need to treat the zone where the bark and heartwood come together. The cambium is there and it will transport the whammy to the roots.

When I was working with Tallgrass Restoration we always used AquaNeat (Glyphosate/aka Roundup).

It did the job very well.

D8.....is that the stuff used in Vietnam? Agent Orange:confused::)

Where can a person get some. Can anyone buy it?

Yes anyone can buy it, any farm supply store should have it. It comes in a bottle about the size of a pringles chip can, maybe a tad shorter. And you dont need to treat the whole stump, like PD said, just the outer layer where the cambium is or basically the layer just under the bark.

Once my stumps sprouted suckers I just sprayed roundup on the green and it killed them dead. Bass wood and other soft wood you could basicly kick away in 2 years. Now ash you would break your toes. That requires the D8.:D A guy with a big track hoe can pluck them in seconds too and burry them for you. Thats what I did on the new field, and he was done in no time and the stumps gone.

PA, the track hoe is a big back hoe, a huge one. They scoop up the stump like we pick our nose.:D It digs in deep enough to get all the major wood for digging afterward. Then they dig a deeper hole big enough and deep enough to burry them all in, and cover them up, deep. Gone in no time. Then you can go over it with a digger that will pull most of the fine roots for you to pick up, some need to be cut. Then we used a disk and repeated picking some small roots. Then a drag leveled it off nice for the drill or planter. It was by far the fastest way to get what we wanted done.

OK, It cost me about a thousand bucks to have about 40 trees taken down. He did it all with the track hoe. I started doing what your doing and he laughed and said spend your time more wisely, I'm like how?, he said go to work. I came home and he was done. He dug the stumps I had ready and just dug a swipe or two at the roots of the trees still standing, then reached up and pulled or pushed them over like nothing. Then he crushed them in the hole. Them things will amaze you with the power they have. And he did it all in just hours. I spent a month de limbing about 40 trees, and cleaning all that junk up. Hauling trailer after trailer load, burning non stop, My wife was ready to kill me. I hit the dirt with the chain saw 50 freekin times too and had to deal with that. It was a night mare until the man with the machine showed up.:D If nothing else you could ask a guy what he would charge to do it. Blacky, this guy is cheep. But he may run over something of yours you dont want him to, right after U told him not to.
You just have to except that when you call him over.:D

That is a hell of a deal. It's going to cost me about $150 in chains, gas, and oil. All the smaller limbs are making brush piles for winter cover. The stumps are anti-farming barriers. Me and my dad got the hung up tree out today with 80 ft of log chains and the pickup. Tomorrow I should be able to really hammer again.

PA, that is the way to do it. Do be careful though. it is a dangerous occupation but can be done safely.

I renovated 2 shelterbelts on my farm by doing the same thing you are doing and they have prodcue abundantly.
