Pigeon
I like them for starting with. They are tuff birds live forever puppys can pull feathers doesn't matter and they stink so it's easier for the pups to locate them.
I like to build a young pup's desire with pen raised quail. Let the pup have fun, and really build up that fire and desire. Then I'll start the process of breaking the dogs on pigeons, and then go back to quail to proof em.
I use quail in the beginning so there is less chance of a wing hitting pup in the face and causing birdshyness. Pigeons can be big and powerful to a young puppy.
I should have added that we are sought out here for our knowledge base and many novice dog owners or new dog owners use your info for help. Please keep this poll free from comment. Let it be a simple example of what most of you feel is a good way to start a new pup. Let polls like this begin to help inform and not debate. There is plenty of places in other topics for voicing an opinion. So please just enter a vote. Thanks
I've never had other birds available so my dogs have always been introduced to wild pheasants early. It's worked for me. But then I've never had to do a lot of training with my dogs. Lots of obedience and then just field time to let them learn and their natural abilities to take over.
I'd start with Pigeons, but not go back and forth, Mojo was on a pheasant then we tried quail because of price and he struggled, not sure if it is just perception, but I think it helped to use the same birds so he knows the smell that much more.
Because there is places already this is debated. And I just wanted everyone to be able to put in their 2 cents with out all the argument. Many don't voice an opinion on such subjects because of that. So thats the just of it. This way a fella or gal wanting to learn the first dog experience will be able to see the suggestion of many instead of just a couple.
