Sporting Guns in the Field

Just curious if anyone shoots a "sporting" model in the field, while hunting?

There are a couple of Browning O/U's that I am looking at, but I am not sure about a sporting gun in the field. It do not worry about performance, I worry about the ported barrel and the noise that fellow hunters may have to endure.

What are your thoughts?

Not all sporting models have ported barrels but quite a few of the Brownings do. Unless you hunt a lot different then I do I don't think there would be any impact on other hunters from the porting. I was just talking to someone a few weeks ago about sporting guns for multi purpose clays and to hunt and I don't see an issue at all. Hard for a lot of people to justify a sporting gun for 3-5 rounds of clays a year but easier if you can hunt with it also. What models are you looking at?

Still up in the air, but if I run with Browning, I like the 625 Sporting. Love the looks of this gun, the fore end, etc.

A little rant, I think Browning is getting to "vanilla" with their field guns. The "rolled" scrolling and the basic grade woods really do not appeal to me. I'm temped to pick up a 725 Field, but it is just so plain looking. The other gun I have always liked and am considering is the Silver Pigeon V. Beautiful gun.

Once the model is determined, then I have to think, if it is just for field use, 12 or 20?

I shoot a Benelli Sport II and use it for just about everything. I shoot trap, sporting clays and pheasant with it. It is easy on the shoulder and works great for me. I have not warmed up to O/Us yet. I tried a few and still like my Benelli better.

Do you shoot a lot of Sporting?

Here's my take.

If you shoot a lot of Sporting clays and are just a casual hunter, meaning you may hunt a handful of times during the season, then a sporting model makes sense if your budget only allows one gun.

That said, if you are an occasional Sporting Clays shooter that avidly hunts during the course of the season, then a field model makes more sense. Generally the Sporting models will be slightly heavier and come with options for longer barrels.

At the end of the day, either one will suffice for either activity, so then it comes down to personal preference.

If your worried about porting being too loud for your hunting partners, I wouldn't. If they're walking or sitting that close to you when shooting to be bothered by the slightly louder report of a ported barrel, then you are far too close to each other which brings in safety issues of being in that close a proximity. A non issue if they are at a reasonable distance.

That's my 2 cents.

I have a Cortona Grande Sporting. Even has the adjustable comb, which I have never moved LOL. I did not buy it for that reason. I bought it because it fits me perfect. And I can flat out kill birds with it. It has the ports, but I never hear anything about it. If the shoe fits, wear it.

On a Sporting model you will want to be sure to find out what the pattern split is at the point of impact. My CZ Sporter has a 60/40 split at the POI for raising clay birds whereas my field model CZ Wingshooter Elite is a 50/50 split at the POI. Sporting models can vary from 50/50 to 80/20.

Just something to consider.
Feel free to PM me if you have further questions.
