Sportdog Beepers

Hi all, was wondering what you think of the Sportdog Beepers (either the DSL-400 or the Upland Hunter)?

Comments welcome, good, bad, pros & cons.

Thanks!!!

Greg

I have no idea whether Sport Dog makes a good beeper collar, but I do have a preference for bells over beepers. Other hunters I have talked to find the sound of beepers to be annoying too. A bell, assuming it is securely attached to the dog, is foolproof - no battery or other electric gizmo to go bad. The sound of a bell has plenty of carry too and is pleasant. Anyway, there's my unsolicited two-cents worth. :D

I'm on my 5th year with a Sportdog e-collar (with tone function). There have been zero issues

I prefer quietness when hunting. No bells, no whistles. Vibration collar for long range dogs. Hand signals when they make eye contact.

I suppose the beeper collars are a cost effective tool, albeit a bell runs about $5. I bought a beeper collar about 20 years ago, tried it once or twice, and put it on the shelf - again my personal preference.

I was a bell guy (well put them on my dogs - not me) up until two years ago. Now I use them off and on, depending on weather, terrain, my mood.

I would seriously look into the GPS systems that are out there today. You can truly run quiet. I have the Astro (no e-correction), but the Alpha is available with that set of tools if interested. Best money I have spent on hunting equipment - bar none.

There are other brands out there, but I cannot comment on them.

Very tall grass, corn field and cattails the dog gets the bell.

Actually, I keep the dog on heel in a corn field, until the last 20-30 yards then let him go. There can be too much chasing in the corn!

Hunted with a fellow that used a beeper on his GSP; needed therapy after listening to the constant beep-beep.

Beepers and bells

I use to use bells on my Springers but when I switched to pointing dogs I purchased beepers. I had the Sport dog 400, it didn't perform well for me the caps kept unscrewing and I would lose the battery which rendered it useless. This happened in South Dakota the first day of a week long hunt. While I found a battery at Walmart without the end cap it wouldn't work. Later I purchased a dogtra 2005 beeper trainer and still have it. I run my dogs in point only mode so the only time it sounds off is when the dog is on point. I also have a tri tronics beeper and trainer collar which is a add on. Its heavier then the dogtra and louder I can put it on a with the trainer or alone works well.
