Spay or not to Spay

One of my pointers is getting up in years (7 to be exact) and my vet recommends that she be spayed. I'm not sure if I should go through with the procedure for it seems unnecessary because she has no health problems. The vet claims that all older females should be spayed. Does anyone have thoughts or experience with this?

7 is not what I would call old, but getting a girl done can prevent a lot of issue later. If I know there will be no more or never a pup from a dog sure I would do it. Lady will be 8 and she will be spay this summer. It can prevent cancers later. + the stink, male nutso thing, and isolation can stop finaly.:D no more worrys about the buddys dog hunting when in heat. So yea if your not going to breed the dog, I would spay.

Good idea for most dogs and most people who are not really dedicated breeders anyhow.

Two reasons: It will reduce the incidence of mammary cancers, a big killer of older intact females. And it will eliminate the chance of pyometra (uterine infection) which can kill a dog very fast. I think this should be done around two years or so if the dog is truly not "the dog of a lifetime".

NB

my pup is 7.5 months old.. shes just got spayed yesterday. I dont need my dog going in heat on a hunting trip and if there other male dogs, they wont focus on hunting, they will see a dog in heat and chase her instead of pheasants. I wanted to spay her bc Im not going to breed my dog.

the vet said it would reduce the chances pf developing mammary cancer by up to 7 times.

I take in consideration though, the cost of spaying vs puppies is very cheap.
