Hello everyone,

First post after much stalking - hoping for some help as I have really waited far to long to get a definite plan laid out - The woes of too much work

INTRODUCTION --
SO an introduction first - I'm Toby a contractor that works way too hard and then on my days off hunts way to hard (I love it) my passions are bird hunting, backpack hunting, spearfishing, and other forms of strenuous hunts, I do like the odd trip duck hunting and all the shinanigans that occur in the clubhouse at night as well ! My fianc? Jorden is a chef and just recently started her own catering business, she hasn't taken any big game but is very eager and loves to hunt birds and shoot her bow and rifle (which she spent all her last tax return on), Jade is her 5yr old who is well only 5 but loves to be outdoors and has a very nice plastic side-by-side with plastic shotshells she loves to take along on our hunting trips, unfortunately she can't make it that far yet on those little legs. And last but not least is our faithful furry hunting sidekick Milo (pronounced in German as Melo) who spends all night and day either hunting squirrels in the back yard or dreaming about chasing some sort of game though the hills and meadows. We are very happy and have the best wednesday night BBQ's in Santa Cruz - everyone is welcome to stop by if they are in town

THE TRIP --
So my fianc?, her daughter, Milo and I have been blessed with the time off to take a 5 week trip from the beginning of Oct. thru the mid of November. We plan a road trip from my home town of Santa Cruz, ca heading up through Idaho, crossing into Wyoming and Yellowstone, maybe heading into the Pierre region of South Dakota as I really want to check out the Grasslands for a sharptail and as well as for the pheasant opener (that was Jordens hunting wish for the trip), returning back to Wyoming for the end of the month to hopefully chase some antelope and then visiting family trough Colorado on my way to my elk hunt outside of Montrose before heading back towards California.

This will be my second trip to S.D as I was there about 5 yrs ago with an Ex from Mobridge and we had great fun hunting over the holidays in the snow on her families property. That relationship is gone and we will be heading into S.D. before the opener but from the west and have no plan to hold to - if the east has some good un-pressured spots we would be happy to explore any areas. I thought I'd reach out and see if anyone had suggestion for areas and especially places we could camp that would be a good area for exploring with a 5yr old while the other was out hunting with the dog. We do all plan to hunt together but I'm sure grouse is not in the books for a 5 yr old. We are members of our local Elks lodge and were thinking about stopping by the Pierre Elks lodge and seeing if any of the member would be willing to trade some farm work for access to hunt/camp out but that is a long shot and could be a dead end street.

If anyone would be willing to help me in the right direction I would really appreciate it - It would make for a great week to our fantastic trip and could be the spot for Jorden to take her first wild pheasant !!!! I can't wait to see her face

I will be taking lots of pictures

What more can i say

Not sure why my photos are not showing ;-(

I drove out last year from the Central Valley. We spent our first day in Pierre, hunted the grasslands in the morning and saw a bunch of sharps but never got in range. We hit some Game production areas along the river on our way out and got into plenty of pheasants. I think Pierre is a good base camp.

OH really :)

That sounds like a good time - I'm fine with some far out flushes as long as one of those sharptails makes a bad mistake on the trip !

I was looking at those game production areas along the river myself !

So sad to see the numbers in California so low for quail - Where do you usually hunt ? We hunt the coast mostly and mainly Fort Hunter Liggett which has been so dry the last couple years you really have to love camping and hiking to enjoy hunting there.

I do love a good basecamp and some chingy beer bottles !!!!

We went in December and it was windy and no snow on the ground which didn't help with spooky sharps. Stayed in a motel in Ft. Piere and drank plenty of Shiner bock.:D

I hunt the Sierra foothills mostly but venture as far as Tule Lake in the north and Baker or Blythe in the south for birds.

Nice looking pup, the mountain quail are one of my favorites.

Shiner Bock - love that beer but haven't had any for a while !!!!

Love the sierras but hardly get out that way - to much boot leather to loose in the coastal ranges and the TRAFFIC :(

Love my boy - but I do also take care of my woman and the kid too

Not sure if I can post the pics I saved of the ex girlfriend ;-)
