Snake Avoidance

Not sure if this crosses the line of soliciting, even though I have no stake in this. I am sure the forum will let me know, sorry in advance if it does.

I know it is not much of an issue at this time of year but there was a thread earlier in the year about snake avoidence. My Irish Setter went through this and it seems to work even through his thick scull. Check into it if your interested, they also have one in June.

"If you are interested in putting your dog through the CGDA Snake Avoidance Course in January we will train a limited number of dogs at the International Sportsmans Exposition. This is held at the Convention Center January 6th through 9th . There are still some slots available (see below)
The dogs must not have been through a Snake Avoidance Program before.

If you are unable to make this one, I understand Quail Run pheasant preserve may be having one soon. They are located in Kiowa, , their phone number is 303 646 3868.

The training is sponsored yearly by Colorado Gun Dogs Assoc. and for the last 10 years or so has been held at Quail Run. My lab Cody (#4 at the time) was nailed out behind our house when he was a year-old pup. The fang marks on his nose were one inch apart-big snake that my wife didn't see. He survived after a Sunday night trip to the ER and a healthy dose of credit card--he's in my profile pic and has been out two days this year at 12.

Later that summer I took him and lab #3 through the training course at Quail Run and again the next summer. I've also put my new lab Logan (#5-also in the profile pic) through the course last summer. I'll take him for a refresher this summer in June. The price is roughly $50 and I highly recommend it. We've never come across a rattler while hunting in CO (yet) but have encountered many of them in the open space behind my house, in my back yard, and along the bike/running path along the emergency spillway coming out of Cherry Creek Reservoir.

Send me a PM if you have any specific questions.

I live and hunt in montana. bighorn county(home) is lousy with rattlesnakes. The snake training is mandatory. You owe it to your dog. In addation you should check with your vet about the shots that are now available. They don't make the dog snake proof but will help minimize the damage and allow the dog to make it to the vet with a much better chance to recover with minimum damage. The shot is not very expensive but does require an annual booster.

New here, I can see it benefit in the early season. I think I'll check it out, hate to loose a good dog to the critter.
