Hi,I'm looking at smith center area for a december hunt, most likely after the Kansas deer season,is that a good starting point or is further west by Norton a better bet.I've read a lot about Kansas but have only hunted the Dakotas, some expert advice on the area and best times(december or january is all that's left this year for me) to go would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

I do not have direct knowledge of bird numbers in that area, but the Kansas Dept.of Wildlife and Parks, seems to think that whole area pretty much took in the shorts, due to extremely wet cold spring/summer conditions. West and soutwest probably better. If your going to drive a distance, might as well go where the birds are.

Hey, i am from that area, and im headed home for the opener, ill let you know what I find. Ive already seen a good number of birds when im home from college.

I may be heading down that way Dec 15-19 had a friend down there deer hunting said he stopped walking the fields to his stands because he kept kicking up pheasants. Just because numbers are down doesn't mean they are not there.

Good luck hope to see you down there!

didnt see many birds in my fields that I walked, however I heard some people did quite well its very spotty. good luck

Hunted just east of Smith Center for 3 days with 10 guys and 3 good shorthairs we only saw about 10 birds all weekend on private land. Did hear some shooting going on around us but never saw anyone with birds at the local diners.

It was hit or miss for us as well. Maybe it had something to do with the early harvest, but we didn't find hardly any birds at all in the milo stubble this year, most were in the CRP grass.

I hope you guys did ok up there that area has a lot of grass and that's what we hit when we are up there. I know its a tough walk but I prefer CRP grass in the later part of the season, they seem to hold better than in row crops but you get wore out walkin it. Lol

We hunted Portis / Osborne area for the 1st week of the opener. Shot lots of birds. Saw lots more. Kicked up about 5 covey of quail also. Hunted Glen Elder / WIHA / and some private. Got birds out of all of them. Birds were pretty spooky but we worked em real quiet and real slow. We gave the dogs plenty of time to work the cover. I was amazed at how many roosters buried down in the CRP and tried to just let us walk by. The dogs found them as long as we were willing to give them time. Probably better bird numbers in other areas but a guy can get a limit in NC this year if he's willing to work. Good luck.
