So I was wondering is it normal for my pup to sleep all day. I mean he gets up and plays but sleeps a lot and still sleeps 8 hours a night. We go out for a run in the morning maybe a mile and a walk in the evening so I don't think I am overworking him. He is a 4 month old GSP. Any Ideas as to why he likes to sleep.

I wish I could get that kinda of sleep in a day.
If the pup is new I'm sure he's geting used to you and the house and maybe the stress of the whole thing just makes him tired? I would think in a month you may hope he would lay down and take a nap.
Post a picture of the pup.

My GSP i had when he was a pup, they do sleep alot. mine would play, then sleep, then play then sleep then bedtime he would sleep all the way through, then play and sleep.

its pretty normal for pups. as they get older, they will not sleep as much. hes a pup.

I once read in a Dog Book someplace and by whom I don't know. But it said most dogs young and old sleep 80-90% of the time. From what I have seen in dogs over my many years it seems to be pretty true............Bob

Thanks I was a little concerned was actually going to take him to the vet. I am kind of like a new parent with him. he might as well be my son :). We just got back from the dog park he had a blast now he's sleep again, glad to know it's a normal thing my wife told me to stop worrying he is just a baby and babies sleep a lot but I just cant help it I would do the same if it were one of my daughters, he's part of the family!! Anyways thanks again for the info.

do you have kids? if so, you know babies sleep alot. puppies are the same way. they eat, crap, play and sleep all in that order, or maybe they may crap before anything then sleep.

Recon, Tony is 10 years old, I take him for a run daily, like your "romp in the park." After his run, Tony wants a little to eat and a good drink of water. Then he wants his Kennel Outside where he can SLEEP, with out the household distractions. Dogs darn near sleep their lives away so don't worry about it. Yes, dogs do become part of the family, they are even more work than a child. But we don't care, they are our babies even at 10 years old...............Bob

from the recent books I've read, pup's prime growth period can let them sleep around 15-18 hours a day. like someone else said - similar to kid - sleep. eat. poop. play. sleep. eat. poop. play. repeat.

are you quoting my infamous line? you sir, that was a violation of my copyright laws.

Just kidding.

yah exactly like a kid, they eat, sleep, poop, cry(or chew) and repeat all over again.

pups will be pups, once they get to be a year or older. they will sleep less.. but tend to be more lazier if youre not out hunting.
